Ranking the 3 biggest needs Curt Cignetti must address in the 2027 recruiting class

The summer months have the eyes of the college football world focusing on recruiting. Spring practice is over and fall camp is still a ways away from starting up, which means coaching staffs across the country are hitting the recruiting trail hard looking for the next college football stars.

Several Big Ten teams have put forth strong recruiting efforts over the last several weeks. In Bloomington, Curt Cignetti has built Indiana's 2027 class up from three players to 11 players over the last month, and the class continues to move up in the national recruiting rankings.

Indiana 2026 schedule breakdown: Ranking every game by win probability

Cignetti's 2027 class currently features a trio of blue-chip prospects, and with Official Visit season in full swing, more commits could be coming sooner rather than later.

Cignetti has put in solid work thus far, but more is needed. With that in mind, here are the three most important position groups Cignetti and his staff still need to address in the 2027 class.

1. Cornerback

Indiana suffered a tough blow with the decommitment of 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. last month. The coveted prospect was IU's highest-ranked commit in its 2027 class, coming in as the No. 16 cornerback and No. 139 overall player in the country at the time of his decommitment according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Cignetti has yet to land a 2027 cornerback since Torbert's decommitment, so finding a dynamic playmaker to fill that void should be at the top of his to-do list. 3-star cornerbacks Chris Bradley and Ramir Harris-Dupree are set to take Official Visits to Indiana this weekend, so perhaps Cignetti can seal the deal with one or both of those recruiting targets.

2. Linebacker

One position group noticeably thin in Indiana's 2027 recruiting class at this time is linebacker. The lone LB commit comes in the form of 3-star Garyon Hobbs, who may not even play the linebacker position in college. 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins has Hobbs best projected as a box safety or nickel defender.

That means Cignetti will likely be on the prowl for linebacker talent over the next few weeks. Defensive coordinator Bryant Haines is among the best in the business, and he has a great eye for promising linebackers. Hoosier fans should have plenty of faith in his ability to find and develop the right players for IU at the linebacker position.

3. Wide receiver

Cignetti has already secured verbal commitments from 3-star wide receivers Branden Sharpe and Jordan Carrasquillo in the 2027 class. Both are talented playmakers with plenty of potential, but they both currently rank outside the Top-100 among all receivers in the 2027 cycle. Bringing in more depth at WR position should be a point of emphasis for Cignetti and company moving forward.

The Hoosiers are firmly in the mix to land Lawrence North star wideout Monshun Sales, who is ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Indiana as well as the No. 1 WR in the country. The 5-star talent is down to a list of finalists that includes Indiana, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, and Miami (FL). Needless to say, landing Sales would be a massive win for Indiana's 2027 recruiting class.
