The moves Darian DeVries has made in the transfer portal so far have fans of Indiana basketball feeling more optimistic. His first season in Bloomington ended in underwhelming fashion, but DeVries has brought in six impact transfers that currently make up the No. 1 portal class in the country according to On3.
There have been many wins for the Hoosiers in the portal, as DeVries has added PG Markus Burton from Notre Dame, G Darren Harris from Duke, SG Jaeden Mustaf from Georgia Tech, SG Bryce Lindsay from Villanova, C Samet Yigitoglu from SMU, and PF Aiden Sherrell from Alabama. That group gives Hoosier fans a lot to be excited about.
However, there are still a few players who DeVries and company may regret passing on.
Paulius Murauskas
When Saint Mary's forward Paulius Murauskas announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, he immediately became one of the most coveted big men on the market. He is ranked as the No. 9 overall player and No. 4 power forward in the portal by 247Sports, and his elite scoring and rebounding ability would've made for a great fit in Indiana's new-look frontcourt. However, Murauskas committed to Arizona State earlier this week.
Roster overhaul: 2026 Transfer Portal tracker for Indiana Hoosiers basketball
This past season, the 6'8" stretch-4 was second in the WCC averaging 18.4 points per game and ranked third in the conference with a field goal percentage of 48.2%. He was also a steady contributor in the rebounding department, bringing down 7.6 boards per game. Indiana needs as much rebounding help as possible, as IU's leading rebounder this past season was Tucker DeVries who averaged 5.3 rebounds per game.
Yigitoglu and Sherrell have the potential to be a great frontcourt combination, but missing out on Murauskas is a bummer.
Bryson Tiller
Indiana had a second chance to land former top-100 prospect Bryson Tiller when he entered the transfer portal after just one season at Kansas. In the fall of 2024, Indiana was among the top-four finalists to land Tiller coming out of high school. At the time, Tiller was a five-star prospect and ranked as the No. 16 player in the country for the 2025 recruiting class according to the247Sports Composite Rankings. However, he ultimately chose to play for Bill Self at Kansas.
The pressure is on Darian DeVries to land one more impact player through the portal
Tiller put together a strong true freshman season in Lawrence. He appeared in 35 games with 31 starts playing just under 26 minutes per game and averaged 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per contest. He went on the market again through the portal, but is now committed to Missouri. With three years of eligibility remaining, he would have been a great piece for Indiana's future under DeVries.
Rowan Brumbaugh
The name of Tulane point guard Rowan Brumbaugh was linked to the Hoosiers when the portal first opened. But after DeVries restocked Indiana's backcourt with Markus Burton, Darren Harris, Jaeden Mustaf, and Bryce Lindsay, the hype of Brumbaugh coming to Bloomington died down. He recently committed to SMU to play for Andy Enfield.
Brumbaugh was one of the top scorers in the portal, as he led the Green Wave and ranked second in the American scoring 19.2 points per game this past season. He is an efficient shooter, as he shot 45.2% from the floor, 36.0% from three, and owns a career free throw percentage of 80.6%. For his efforts, he earned All-American Conference Second Team honors. Indiana's new-look backcourt figures to be just fine without him, but Brumbaugh could be in for a monster senior season with the Mustangs.
