After winning the National Championship last season, the Indiana Hoosiers are in a strong position to defend their title in 2026. Despite losing several big names from last year's team including QB Fernando Mendoza, WR Omar Cooper Jr, WR Elijah Sarratt, RB Roman Hemby, and CB D'Angelo Ponds, Indiana's talented transfer portal class has plenty of potential to deliver elite results.
Furthermore, Curt Cignetti's leadership gives Indiana plenty of staying power this upcoming season. The Hoosiers are expected to qualify for the College Football Playoff for a third year in a row, and are already among the preseason favorites to win the national title.
EA Sports College Football 27 snubs Indiana from No. 1 spot
The Hoosiers continue to take the college football world by storm both in reality and in the video game world. The upcoming release of EA Sports College Football 27 has fans across the country fired up, and Indiana is well-represented on the cover and trailer for the game.
With Memorial Stadium in Bloomington serving as the backdrop, Cignetti appears front and center on the cover of the Deluxe Edition of the popular game. He also narrates the official trailer which also features plenty of Indiana players.
With the release of the game coming up on July 9, EA Sports has released its team rankings for College Football 27. Despite all the love the Hoosiers got in the game's other promotional materials, EA Sports doesn't have IU claiming the top spot in the team rankings. Instead, Indiana trails behind not one, but two teams from the Big Ten.
The Oregon Ducks are ranked as the No. 1 team in the country while the Ohio State Buckeyes are listed at No. 2. Keep in mind, Indiana defeated both of those teams en route to winning the National Championship last season, and even defeated Oregon twice.

Despite coming off an undefeated National Championship that was one of the best seasons in recent college football memory, it wasn't enough for Indiana to claim a No. 1 overall ranking according to EA Sports.
Indiana's chances with 5-star WR Monshun Sales just got more interesting thanks to LSU
Obviously this is a video game, but EA Sports has poured millions of dollars worth of research into it to make the experience as life-like as possible. The attention to detail, resources, and amount of time that goes into making every little detail as close to reality as possible is what fans love most about the game.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how close the rankings from EA Sports are to the Preseason AP Top-25 Poll that is set to be released in August. Indiana is all but a lock to earn its first-ever Top-10 preseason ranking in program history, and could very well be the No. 1 team in the country.
The Hoosiers are set to open their title-defending campaign on Saturday, September 5 with a matchup against North Texas at Memorial Stadium.
