The spring and summer months bring an intense focus on recruiting in the college football world. Coaches are looking for elite talent to bring to their respective teams, and recruits across the country are exploring which programs will be the best fit as they begin their collegiate careers.
Curt Cignetti drops another not-so-subtle hint about Memorial Stadium expansion
In Bloomington, Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers have been busy evaluating talent and hosting Official Visits throughout the months of May and June. Cignetti's recruiting strategy has been effective thus far, as he had secured a total of 16 commitments to Indiana's 2027 recruiting class.
IU's group of 2027 commits is a well-rounded class that is holding steady with a Top-30 ranking. However, Cignetti could have the Hoosiers on the verge of something much bigger.
Indiana holding steady with a Top-30 recruiting class for 2027
The highest-ranked high school recruiting class in Indiana program history came in 2022 with a ranking of No. 25 in the country. Since then, the Hoosiers have posted recruiting classes ranked 59th, 60th, 53rd, and 30th in the Rivals Team Recruiting Rankings.
As it stands, Indiana claims the No. 29 spot in the Rivals rankings for the 2027 cycle. That puts the Hoosiers well within striking distance of boasting their best-ever high school recruiting class. That would signal the continuation of a new era in Bloomington, and show that the Hoosiers can compete with the blue blood programs out on the recruiting trail.
Among Indiana's current 16 commits for the 2027 cycle, half a dozen are blue chip prospects. EDGE Myles Smith, LB Jalaythan Mayfield, OT Mason McDermott, and DL Reinaldo Lopez are all considered 4-star recruits by Rivals, while S Brady Scott earned a 4th-star from ESPN and WR Branden Sharpe gained 4-star status from 247Sports.
Cignetti is also on the verge of potentially landing Indiana's first-ever 5-star recruit. Lawrence North WR Monshun Sales has entered his decision-making process, and Indiana is considered the frontrunners by multiple recruiting experts, including Rivals' Steve Wiltfong.
Curt Cignetti will still utilize the transfer portal heavily at Indiana
No matter how strong of a recruiting class Cignetti puts together, he will still rely on the transfer portal. That has been an effective strategy for Cignetti's success at Indiana, and even if he starts to bring in more and more blue chip recruits, the portal will continue to be a reliable source for Cignetti and the Hoosiers.
Cignetti's approach to the portal has yielded an overall record of 27-2 over his two seasons with teams chalk full of experienced players from the portal. Most notably, transfer QB Kurtis Rourke and Fernando Mendoza had tremendous seasons at IU, with Mendoza leading IU to its best-ever season while also winning the Heisman Trophy in the process.
This season's portal class is led by former TCU QB Josh Hoover and former Michigan State WR Nick Marsh, both of whom should have a significant impact in Bloomington. In total, Indiana's 2026 group of incoming transfers is ranked as the No. 8 portal class in the country by 247Sports.
