Curt Cignetti's tenure in Bloomington has brought previously unheardof levels of excitement around the Indiana football program. The Hoosiers have taken the college football world by storm over the last two seasons, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
With demand for Indiana football at an all-time high, stadium expansion talks continue to make their way around the internet. The general discussion surrounding a Memorial Stadium expansion project has been ongoing for the last year or so, but now those discussions are more prevalent than ever.
Could a Memorial Stadium expansion project be coming soon?
Coming off a perfect 16-0 season an National Championship, stadium expansion talks have only gotten louder. Speaking with Adam Breneman earlier this week, Cignetti made a not-so-subtle comment about stadium expansion rumors.
"The stadium will expand," Cignetti said. “We’re in the top third of the Big Ten in resources. Everything here has improved from a facility standpoint and rev share, etc. And I think, you know, what a lot of people don’t understand about Indiana and the term the old sleeping giant was the 800,000 plus alums. More alums than any university in America.”

Indiana boasts the largest living alumni base in the country, and it's clear that the school is going all-in on football. Those resources, along with the impressive winning culture that Cignetti has built as well as a hunger around the fan base for more, could be the perfect formula for a stadium expansion project.
Expansion to Memorial Stadium would be a major project
Memorial Stadium was originally completed back in 1960. Its current capacity of 53,524 ranks 14th out of 18 Big Ten stadiums. Given the impressive success that has taken place in Bloomington under Cignetti, demand for more seats is at an all-time high.
The most recent renovations to the venue came in two parts that started almost two decades ago. Those projects included the enclosure of the north end zone in 2009 and the enclosure of the south end zone in 2018. Both of those projects raised the capacity of The Rock by approximately 5,000.

But a potential expansion at this point in time would be an even bigger project that would raise the capacity by a lot more than that. Now we're talking an expansion of at least 10,000 seats and possibly even as much as 25,000 depending on the scale the athletic department wants to pursue.
The stadium doesn't need a complete makeover, just an upgrade. Many features of the Memorial Stadium are showing its age, most notably with a lack of amenities that are found in many other stadiums across the country.
In the current era of NIL, getting the most money per seat in college football stadiums is a top priority for programs across the country. Finding the funds needed to support roster and coaching staff construction is top of mind for all athletic departments, and one way to raise those funds is with more seats, luxury boxes, and amenities at stadiums.
It will be interesting to see where the expansion talks go from here, but if Cignetti has his way, it sounds like a facelift to Memorial Stadium could be coming sooner rather than later.
