Darian DeVries looking to make some transfer portal additions this week. The Hoosiers have yet to land a transfer commit in the first week of the portal being open, and with other Big Ten teams already making serious moves, DeVries is in need of a solid week.
A total of four transfer targets visited Bloomington over the weekend. Among them were Duke guard Darren Harris, Notre Dame guard Markus Burton, Georgia Tech guard Jaeden Mustaf, and Alabama forward Aiden Sherrell.
Players in the portal can commit to a new team at any time, so which of those four players seems like the most likely candidate to be IU's first portal commit of the offseason?
Indiana in the driver's seat to land Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton
Indiana seems to be in the driver's seat when it comes to Notre Dame transfer Markus Burton. His visit to Bloomington began on Sunday and is slated to go through Tuesday.
Prior to visiting Indiana, the talented scorer took a visit to Houston, but the Cougars have since added LSU transfer guard Dedan Thomas Jr. to their transfer portal class. That is good news for DeVries and the Hoosiers. Following the news of Thomas' commitment to Houston,On3's Jamie Shaw logged an expert prediction for Indiana to land Burton. Hoosier fans are hoping it happens.
Indiana commit puts forth record-breaking performance in NorthEast Classic
Burton is one of the top names available on the market. He is ranked as the No. 22 overall player and No. 7 point guard in the portal by 247Sports.
Burton spent three seasons in South Bend with the Fighting Irish, although his junior season was cut short after just 10 games due to an ankle injury. Before suffering the injury, the Mishawaka, IN native averaged 18.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 48.9% from the floor.
Despite coming off a season-ending injury, Burton remains a top target for DeVries. He led all ACC freshmen in scoring with 17.5 points per game in 2023-24, and then led the entire ACC with 21.3 points per game as a sophomore in 2024-25. He also shot 44.2% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
His well-rounded offensive skill set would be a great addition for Indiana entering the 2026-27 season. DeVries has a lot of work to do in the portal, and landing Burton would be a great place to start.
