Darian DeVries and his staff are looking to restore the glory in Bloomington.

DeVries' first season at the helm of the Indiana basketball program delivered underwhelming results, as the Hoosiers went 18-14 and missed the NCAA Tournament once again. Indiana has now missed out on March Madness in each of the last three seasons and in eight of the last 10 years.

But the tide could be turning.

DeVries has made five transfer portal additions this week, which has the IU 2026-27 roster coming nicely info form. His latest addition has Indiana basketball fans ready to believe once again.

Aiden Sherrell is a monster addition for Darian DeVries and Indiana

On Wednesday afternoon, Indiana landed its most impactful transfer of the offseason so far when Alabama forward Aiden Sherrell committed to the Hoosiers. A 6'11" 255-pound power forward hailing from Detroit, MI, Sherrell is ranked as the No. 11 overall player and the No. 5 power forward in the portal by 247Sports.

DeVries was already putting the college basketball world on notice with his moves earlier this week, but landing Sherrell takes Indiana's portal class to the next level. Sherrell is the highest-ranked player in Indiana's 2026 portal class, which is now ranked as the No. 2 portal class in the country.

Sherrell is a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the floor. Playing in all 34 games for the Crimson Tide this past season, the star forward averaged 11.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while shooting 53.9% from the floor. He is also a great rim protector, which is something the Hoosiers lacked last season. Sherrell finished 2nd in the SEC with 2.2 blocks per game last season, while Indiana as a team managed 2,7 blocks per game, which ranked 13th in the Big Ten.

Indiana's portal class has Hoosier fans eyeing an NCAA Tournament appearance

Indiana basketball fans are hungrier than ever for a March Madness run. DeVries' portal moves this week certainly has the program trending in the right direction early on in the offseason.

Why Indiana’s offseason suddenly feels like a turning point for Darian DeVries

Along with Sherrell, IU's portal class consists of shooting guard Jaeden Mustaf from Georgia Tech, guard Darren Harris from Duke, point guard Markus Burton from Notre Dame, and center Samet Yigitoglu from SMU. There is a lot to like in that group.

The front court combo of Sherrell and Yigitoglu has serious potential to be among the best post combinations in the Big Ten. Burton is a proven scorer who led the ACC in scoring two seasons ago, while Mustaf brings a physical rebounding presence to the wing position.

DeVries still has more work to do, but this week has been a good one for the Indiana basketball program. Hopefully he and his staff can continue to ride the momentum and add more solid portal pieces to round out the 2026-27 roster.
