Darian DeVries has built Indiana's 2026 portal class into one of the best in the country. In fact, Indiana's group of transfers is currently ranked as the No. 1 portal class in the country by On3.
DeVries and executive director of basketball Ryan Carr have found great pieces up-and-down IU's roster, which has Hoosier fans fired up for the new season.
However, there are some portal targets out there who have eluded the Hoosiers this offseason. Among them is San Jose State transfer point guard Colby Garland.
Colby Garland commits to Georgia Tech via the transfer portal
On Tuesday, Garland committed to play for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He is the fourth portal commit for Scott Cross' squad, joining Nasir Whitlock from Lehigh, Tylis Jordan from Ole Miss, and Jackson Fields from West Virginia. Garland is ranked as the No. 75 overall player and No. 15 point guard in the portal according to 247Sports.

A native of Magnolia, AR, Garland enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2025-26 with San Jose State. He averaged 20.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game en route to earning Third Team All-Mountain West honors.
He heads to Atlanta with 92 games and 57 collegiate starts under his belt after spending one season each with Drake, Longwood, and San Jose State.
Indiana's backcourt will be just fine without Colby Garland
Garland is a name that has been linked to Indiana since the portal initially opened back on April 7 due to his previous connections with DeVries. Garland played for DeVries at Drake in 2023-24, and for a while, a reunion between the two in Bloomington seemed like a realistic possibility.
But DeVries spent the last week restocking Indiana's backcourt by adding Notre Dame's Markus Burton, Duke's Darren Harris, Georgia Tech's Jaeden Mustaf, and Villanova's Bryce Lindsay. With all of that incoming backcourt talent, there wouldn't be much room for a player like Garland.
DeVries will likely still need to add a depth piece, but entering his senior season, it's clear that Garland was seeking out somewhat guaranteed significant minutes with his new team. Despite their previous connection, the fit just wasn't right. Don't be surprised if Garland is Georgia Tech's starting point guard when the new season rolls around in the fall.
