During the summer months, a lot of the focus in the college football world revolves around recruiting. Official Visit season wrapped up in June, and over the last few weeks prospects across the country have been weighing their options and making commitments. That period is still going on as programs are looking to round out their 2027 classes.

Curt Cignetti has secured a total of 16 commitments in the 2027 cycle. As it stands, Indiana currently owns the No. 29 recruiting class in the country for the 2027 class according to Rivals. It's not a bad spot to be, but when looking around the rest of the Big Ten, Indiana is near the bottom.

Indiana sits near the bottom of the Big Ten recruiting rankings

Owning a Top-30 recruiting class at Indiana is quite the feat, but the vast majority of Big Ten teams are still ahead of the Hoosiers.

In fact, 247Sports has Indiana's 2027 recruiting class ranked 14th out of 18 Big Ten teams. Only Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, and Iowa have lower-ranked 2027 classes in the conference than Indiana.

Indiana's current standing in the Big Ten recruiting rankings is admittedly less than ideal, but there is no need to panic for fans of Hoosier football. Cignetti knows what he's doing, and he doesn't need a roster full of blue chip players and a Top-10 national recruiting class to deliver elite results. He's proved that.

Indiana's recruiting future is extremely bright with Curt Cignetti leading the way

Cignetti has led the Hoosiers to an overall record of 27-2 with back-to-back appearances in the College Football Playoff, and most impressively, orchestrated a perfect 16-0 season and won Indiana's first National Championship a season ago. Those results in just two seasons in Bloomington have produced arguably the greatest turnaround in sports history.

What makes those results even more impressive is the fact that he's done it without elite high school recruiting classes. Entering his first season at Indiana, Cignetti brought in a 2024 class that ranked 60th nationally and 16th in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers went on to go 11-1 and qualified for the College Football Playoff.

3 bold predictions for the rest of Indiana's 2027 recruiting class

Last offseason, he signed a 2025 class that was ranked 53rd in the country and once again, 16th in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers then orchestrated one of the greatest seasons in the history of college football.

In today's era of college football, high school recruiting is still important, but it doesn't carry the same extreme weight that it used to. Instead, the transfer portal has become a massive way in which program's construct their rosters on a year-in and year-out basis. Cignetti has mastered the portal, and knows how to put his players in the best position to succeed. That kind of formula has proven to be extremely effective in today's era.

Plus, Cignetti's elite success has now put Indiana on the radar for blue chip prospects across the country. The Hoosiers are now competing with blue blood programs for 4 and 5-star recruits, and have even already started winning some of those battles. With all of that in mind, Indiana's recruiting future looks just fine with Cignetti leading the way.
