The Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball team will face off in a neutral site battle against the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday afternoon at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Marquette (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) has defeated UAlbany and Southern University this week getting them off to a 2-0 start. While Indiana sits at (1-0, 0-0 BIG TEN) after their 98-51 win over Alabama A&M.
Per IU Athletics press release: The game will be the fourth between the Hoosiers and Golden Eagles on a neutral floor and 11th overall meeting. IU holds an 8-2 advantage in a series that dates back to 1922, including a 96-73 triumph the last time the two sides met as part of the Gavitt Games in Bloomington in 2018.Indiana has defeated Marquette in two of the previous three neutral site contests, including a pair of NCAA Tournament tilts.
The Hoosiers topped the Golden Eagles (75-69) in Nashville en-route to the 1973 Final Four and against (65-56) in Baton Rouge as part of the 1976 undefeated national championship run. The teams also met in the 2001 Great Alaska Shootout where Marquette (50-49) captured the event title under the guidance of future Indiana head coach Tom Crean.
Indiana looked very good in their first game against Alabama A&M despite the new faces and the injuries to their roster.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Reed Bailey, with 21 points, Bailey was one of five Hoosiers in double-digits. Senior forward Tucker DeVries had a great game with a double-double adding 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Indiana had an entirely new roster outlook with all 13 scholarship players being different from last year including the coaching staff under Mike Woodson.
Guards Jason Drake and Aleksa Ristic, and forward Josh Harris were listed as out for the first game of the Darian DeVries era in their win over Alabama A&M on Wednesday night.
The Indiana Hoosiers were predicted to finish tenth in the Big Ten by The Columbus Dispatch and Indianapolis Star in major media polls in a 18-team league in the Big Ten.
Shaka Smart and the Marquette Golden Eagles were projected to finish fifth in the Big East by the league’s coaches. Marquette is led by senior guard Chase Ross was picked as a first-team All-Big East. Last season Ross averaged 10.8 points per game, 5.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and shot 46.7 percent from the field.
So far in two games this year the 6-foot-5, 210 pound guard has averaged 19 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in two games this season. Marquette lost its top three scorers from last season: Kam Jones (19.2 ppg), David Joplin (14.2 ppg) and Stevie Mitchell (10.7 ppg).
