Stephen Daley's return to Indiana is more meaningful than you think

The Indiana defensive front was already in good shape heading into the start of fall camp. The group features a solid mix of returning talent as well as new faces from the transfer portal, giving the Hoosiers the depth and versatility needed to post some big numbers up front.

But on the day before fall camp began, Indiana's defensive line got even better when it was announced that EDGE rusher Stephen Daley would be returning to Bloomington for another season.

Thanks to a recent eligibility ruling from a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado, Daley was one of a handful of athletes from the high school Class of 2022 to receive another year of eligibility. On Tuesday, he officially announced his plans to return to Indiana for one more season.

Daley was among the best defensive linemen in the country last season. In 13 games, he was tied for the national lead with 19 tackles for loss and had accumulated 38 tackles, 19.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles.

But along with his stellar play on the field, Daley is one of the easiest players to root for.

Daley's college football journey has been a long and winding road. Interestingly enough, Curt Cignetti extended him an offer at James Madison out of high school. However, Daley ultimately chose to play in the MAC at Kent State.

He spent three seasons there, and put up strong numbers that included totaling 103 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and a forced fumble over the course of 34 games. Unfortunately, Daley didn't see many wins with the Golden Flashes.

Specifically, Kent State went just 1-23 over Daley's last two seasons. "For two years, I didn't know what it was like to win," Daley told Jared Kelly of Peegs.com. He decided to enter the transfer portal looking for a different opportunity, and ended up at Indiana over other finalist UTEP.

Daley began the 2025 season in Bloomington as a rotational piece on the Hoosier defensive front, but saw his playing time increase following an injury to Kellen Wyatt. He stepped up in a big way, and as previously mentioned, was tied for the national lead with 19.0 tackles for loss through 13 games.

However, Daley's season would be cut short in devastating fashion. Following Indiana's 13-10 victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, Daley suffered a freak lower body injury while high-fiving fans on the field at Lucas Oil Stadium. He would miss the rest of the season and had to watch from the sidelines as the Hoosiers went on to win the National Championship.

Thinking his college football career was over, Daley didn't expect to be back in Bloomington for another go around. But thanks to the recent ruling for a 5th year of eligibility, Daley is running it back with the Hoosiers.

Hoosier football fans are happy to have Daley back in this mix this season, and he has already taken the field at fall camp. He is poised to make the most of the opportunity.
