As the college football offseason treks on, recruiting continues to be a heavy emphasis for teams across the country. Official Visit season is set to enter full swing this weekend as the top recruits in the nation continue their recruiting and decision-making processes.
In Bloomington, the 2027 recruiting class for the Indiana Hoosiers has seen plenty of action over the last week. After suffering a tough loss with the decommitment of 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr, Curt Cignetti secured four 2027 commits last week alone. Indiana's 2027 class now features seven players, and there is still plenty of work to do.
Cignetti and company continue to push for some of the top prospects in the country, but perhaps none are more integral than 5-star WR Monshun Sales.
Curt Cignetti can land his first 5-star commit at Indiana in the form of Monshun Sales
Cignetti has yet to land a 5-star commitment as the head coach at Indiana. He hasn't necessarily needed a roster full of blue chip recruits, as he was able to win a National Championship with a roster consisting of mostly under-the-radar recruits and by pushing the right buttons in the transfer portal. But imagine what he could do with 5-star talent.
Hailing from Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Sales is ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the state of Indiana and the No. 1 wide receiver in the country according to 247Sports. Given his ties to The Hoosier State, Sales has been a top target of Cignetti's for a while. The IU head coach first extended an offer to Sales back on April 12, 2024.
Back in December, Rivals' Steve Wiltfong and Greg Smith logged expert predictions for Kalen DeBoer and Alabama to land Sales. However, Cignetti continues to move Indiana in the right direction during Sales' recruitment and has now taken the inside position. Earlier this month, Wiltfong logged an expert prediction for Indiana to become the landing spot for the 6'5" 195-pound wideout. That is a great sign for Cignetti and company, but it's far from being set in stone.
Sales still has several official visits lined up
The team who poses the biggest threat to Indiana in Sales' recruitment continues to be the Alabama Crimson Tide. While he currently plays high school football in Indiana, Sales' family originally hails from Alabama. He grew up cheering on the Crimson Tide fan and even had the nickname of "Bama" in his younger days.
While not currently predicted as the favorite, Alabama is still firmly in the running to land Sales' services. Sales is set to visit Tuscaloosa later this week beginning on May 29, and that visit will undoubtedly will play a huge role in his decision-making process. Indiana fans will be waiting with bated breathe to see how that visit goes. After that, Sales will then visit Texas on June 5, Ohio State on June 12, and Miami (FL) on June 19.
Holding off DeBoer and Alabama will be no easy task, but Cignetti has Hoosier fans trusting in his process. Furthermore, it's clear that Indiana has the championship pedigree and NIL resources to land recruits of Sales' caliber. Don't be surprised if Sales becomes Cignetti's first 5-star commit at Indiana in the near future.
