Monshun Sales made Indiana football history on Friday afternoon by becoming the first 5-star high school recruit to commit to the Hoosiers. The 6'5" 195-pound WR is among the most prized prospects in all of college football, and Indiana beat out Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, and LSU for his services.
Sales is a part of the 2027 recruiting class, meaning he will head to IU after his upcoming senior season at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. But once he arrives in Bloomington, who will his QB1 be? That question remains to be answered, but with Sales officially Bloomington bound, Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers have endless opportunities to land more of the top QBs in the country.
Monshun Sales picking Indiana can help attract top QBs in the portal
Cignetti has found great success at bringing in top QB talent through the transfer portal during his time at Indiana. In his first season at Bloomington, Cignetti brought in Kurtis Rourke from Ohio. He went on to earn Second-Team All-Big Ten honors after completing 69.4% of his passes and throwing for 29 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions. He also led the Big Ten in yards per attempt (9.5), and rating (176.0).
Last offseason, Cignetti went out west to get Fernando Mendoza from Cal. All Mendoza did upon his arrival in Bloomington was orchestrate the greatest season in Indiana football history. He racked up 3,535 passing yards, 48 total touchdowns, and threw just 6 interceptions en route to winning the Heisman Trophy. Mendoza also shined brightest on the biggest stage, as he provided big moment after big moment in the College Football Playoff and led the Hoosiers to a National Championship.
Monshun Sales' comments about Curt Cignetti will make him a fan favorite at Indiana
Now taking over the Hoosier offense is QB Josh Hoover, who is set to play his final season of college football at Indiana following four years at TCU. Hoover is already garnering plenty of hype, as is listed among the preseason contenders for the Heisman Trophy. He brings plenty of experience to Bloomington, as he made 36 appearances with 31 starts over his four seasons with the Horned Frogs. Hoover has 9,629 yards and 79 total touchdowns to his name in his collegiate career, giving him the most returning production out of any returning QB in the country.
Looking ahead, Cignetti figures to use the portal to bring in veteran QBs down the road. However, Sales' commitment could open the door for blue chip QBs from the high school ranks to have Indiana on their radar as well.
Elite high school quarterbacks could now be an option for Cignetti's recruiting efforts
Former 4-star recruit Tyler Cherry could be an option for Indiana at QB in 2027. Cherry was Indiana's highest-ranked recruit of the 2024 cycle, and could be poised for a future starting role. Indiana's incoming 2026 recruiting class doesn't include a QB, and the 2027 class features 3-star QB Jameson Purcell. It will be interesting to see where those gunslingers stand at this time next offseason.
Looking ahead, Sales picking Indiana could lead to blue chip QBs at the high school level having extreme interest in the Hoosiers. As the first 5-star commit in program history, Sales is the kind of prospect that opens the door for other 5-star to follow in his footsteps. With that in mind, Indiana football fans have a lot to be excited about when it comes to the future of Indiana football recruiting.
Every quarterback loves to have a go-to receiver. Sales has all the tools to be an instant star once he gets to the college ranks, and he has the makings of a bonafide No. 1 WR for a College Football Playoff team. His presence in Bloomington could pave the way for Cignetti to continue bringing in standout QB talent down the road.
