Indiana's dominance is reaching rarefied air in recent college football history

The Indiana Hoosiers are dominating the world of college football, but not everyone is aware of just how good the team has gotten.

Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers have taken the world of college football by storm, and a lot of that has been credited to a dominant offensive unit, led by veteran quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

While many people are well aware of Indiana's undefeated record, not everyone knows just how dominant those wins have been and how incredible Indiana's offense has looked, even when comparing it to some of the greatest teams in recent memory.

Indiana Hoosiers are just as good as recent National Champions

So far this season, the Hoosiers have won their games by an average of 29.0 points, a resounding mark for any program, much less one that faced the then-No. 9 Illinois Fighting Illini and the then-No. 3 Oregon Ducks and walked away with the wins.

There are only five teams that have surpassed that measurement in the last decade and a half, and they all went on to reach the College Football Playoff semifinals, if not to win the whole thing.

CFB teams to win by an averaged of 29.0+ points all season

  • 2013-14 Florida State Seminoles (National Champions)
  • 2018-19 Clemson Tigers(National Champions)
  • 2019-20 Ohio State Buckeyes (CFP Semifinalist)
  • 2019-20 Clemson Tigers (national runners-up)
  • 2020-21 Alabama Crimson Tide (National Champions)

The Hoosiers are just 0.1 points shy of Alabama's point differential from the 2020-21 season, which was 29.1 points per game, including its run to the National Championship game, which it won.

While Indiana is just 10 games into the season, which could easily include facing the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes in the National Championship, the Hoosiers are undeniably heading in the right direction.

Up next, Cignetti and his team will take on the unranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, Nov. 8, at noon ET. The game will be broadcast on FOX and available on both FuboTV and YouTubeTV.
