The quarterback position undoubtedly gets the most attention in the world of college football. After all, they are the ones calling the shots and having the ball in their hands on essentially every single play. Indiana QB Josh Hoover has big shoes to fill taking over for Heisman Trophy-winning QB Fernando Mendoza, and naturally, Hoover has generated a ton of buzz and hype throughout the offseason.
Curt Cignetti just landed a highly-touted 4-star recruit Indiana fans will love
While the Hoosier offense continues to get the bulk of the attention, the IU defense is flying under the radar once again. Indiana possessed one of the best defenses in all of college football last season, and Curt Cignetti and defensive coordinator Bryant Haines have the Hoosier defense poised for another monster season in 2026.
Indiana DT Tyrique Tucker can be one of the best defensive players in college football this season
On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Rittenberg released his list of the top non-QB playmakers in the country heading into the 2026 season. Rittenberg spoke with coaches across the nation about which non-quarterbacks could have the biggest impact on the 2026 season, and Hoosier fans are fired up to see DT Tyrique Tucker getting plenty of love.
Tucker played a key role in Indiana's title-winning season. The 6'0" 307-pound defensive tackle collected 40 total tackles on the season, and racked up 6.0 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and two pass breakups. Among primary defensive tackles, his 6.0 sacks were the 3rd in the country and his 28 pressure were tied for 4th. For his efforts, Tucker earned third-team AP All-America honors.
Looking ahead, Tucker can be even better in 2026.
Tyrique Tucker has unlimited potential in 2026
Tucker was a part of Cignetti's final team at James Madison in 2023-24, and he served as a rotational piece on the Dukes' defensive front. He then followed Cignetti to Bloomington and put together a sophomore season in which he collected 24 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks before enjoying a breakout campaign last season.
Tucker can make an impact in a wide variety of ways. When speaking with ESPN, Cignetti praised Tucker's athleticism, explosiveness, and quickness.
"He was a rotational player my last year at JMU, and came in and made the rotation my first year [at Indiana] as a starter, and really has developed. We give our D-linemen a lot of freedom, depending on whether it's a down block or a back block or a pull, to do some things, and Tyrique is really dedicated to it. He's explosive, good, low center of gravity, he has got short-area quickness and good change of direction."Curt Cignetti
Those attributes, as well as his 42 games of college football experience, give Tucker a chance to be among the best defensive players in the country this season. Furthermore, he can help lead the Hoosiers to becoming a dominant force once again as they work to defend their National Championship.
Last season, Indiana ranked 2nd in the country in total yards allowed per game (266.0) and 2nd in points allowed per game (11.7). Furthermore, the Hoosiers' ranked 2nd in sacks (46.0), 6th in fumble recoveries (11), 6th in interceptions (19), 3rd in total turnovers forced (30), and led the entire country with a turnover differential of +22.
With guys like Tucker back in the mix, the Indiana defense as a whole has serious potential heading into the new season.
