When Markus Burton announced his commitment to Indiana earlier this spring, the college basketball world quickly took notice. Burton was ranked as the No. 22 overall player and No. 7 point guard in the transfer portal by 247Sports at the time of his commitment on April 13, and he figures to play a leading role in IU's backcourt this season.
However, there were still some injury concerns for the former Notre Dame point guard coming out of last season. Burton played just 10 games for the Fighting Irish in 2025-26 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury on December 5 against TCU.
Burton first arrived in Bloomington still working his way back from the injury. Summer workouts are now underway, and Darian DeVries has provided a new update on Burton's injury status. To the delight of Hoosier basketball fans, Burton is good to go.

On Monday, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that Burton has been fully cleared for all basketball related activities.
It's a significant development for Burton, who figures to be Indiana's starting point guard when the start of the new college basketball season rolls around. Now, the Mishawaka, IN native can now start to participate fully in practices and scrimmages in order to build as much chemistry as possible with his new teammates.

Significant news in Bloomington.
Burton spent three seasons at Notre Dame and brings a well-rounded skill set to Bloomington. He was one of the top scoring threats in the ACC during his time in South Bend, and with last year's leading scorer Lamar Wilkerson out of eligibility, Burton could be primed to take over that leading role for the Hoosiers.

Burton heads into his senior season with 69 career games under his belt. He's built up quite the resume in that span, which has Hoosier fans fired up to see what he can do with the Cream and Crimson.
Indiana just landed a huge Official Visit with elite 5-star 2027 big man
As a freshman in 2023-24, Burton earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors after leading all ACC newcomers with 17.5 points per game. He increased that average to an impressive 21.3 points per game as a sophomore, which led the entire ACC. Last season as a junior, Burton averaged a steady 18.5 points per game over 10 contests before suffering his season-ending ankle injury.
In total, Burton is averaging 19.1 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game in his collegiate career. He's also shooting 43.8% from the floor, 33.2 from beyond the arc, and 84.7% at the charity stripe. Because of the ankle injury cutting his junior season short, Burton is seeking an additional year of eligibility from the NCAA.
As Indiana's presumptive starting point guard, Burton figures to have the ball in his hands a lot this season. The offense will likely flow through him, which should give him plenty of opportunities to have a career year. Burton can score in a wide variety of ways, and excels at taking defenders 1-on-1 to the rim and creating mid-range shots off the dribble. IU fans are eager to see his skill set on full display at Assembly Hall this fall.
