Darian DeVries and the Indiana Hoosiers are in the mix to land one of the country's top prospects in the 2027 recruiting cycle.

Darius Wabbington is a 5-star recruit hailing from Phoenix, AZ. Owning a 6'11" 245-pound frame, Wabbington is ranked as the No. 1 center and No. 13 overall player in the nation according to Rivals. His name is one to follow closely during his recruitment process, and it's clear that Indiana is already making an impact on the coveted prospect.

Last month, Wabbington named his list of final contenders. To the delight of Indiana basketball fans, the Cream and Crimson are featured on that list. Now, Wabbington has scheduled an Official Visit to Bloomington for the fall.

According to Joe Tipton of Rivals, Wabbington is set to visit Indiana the weekend of September 5 -- the day of Indiana football's season-opener against North Texas. DeVries and company are sure to roll out the red carpet for Wabbington, as the Hoosiers are up against some major competition in his recruitment.

Wabbington's list of finalists includes Indiana, Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisville, and Texas. Indiana is the fourth program among those contenders to get an Official Visit on the calendar. According to 247Sports, Wabbington's upcoming fall schedule also includes trips to Louisville on September 11, Arizona on September 25, and Texas on October 9. While official dates for visits to Kentucky and North Carolina aren't on the schedule yet, they are sure to be sooner rather than later.

Darian DeVries searching for first 5-star recruit at Indiana

Over his first two offseasons at the helm of the IU program, DeVries has leaned heavily on the transfer portal. It was out of necessity, as he had zero returning players coming back for his first season and has just one returning player coming back from last year's team for the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Thus, roster continuity has not been present in Bloomington during DeVries' short tenure. Additionally, DeVries' incoming high school recruiting classes have not featured any 5-star prospects. DeVries has a chance to change that with Wabbington.

It's clear that DeVries is making the frontcourt a top priority moving forward, and Wabbington could make for the perfect addition to that effort. He owns a massive 6'11" frame and can handle the ball with guard-like skills. While also being effective down low, he can score off the dribble and has the ability to stretch the floor with reliable shot-making from the outside. That is the kind of versatile skill set that DeVries loves to feature on his rosters.

It won't be easy, as competitors like Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, Louisville, and Arizona present plenty of challenges on the recruiting trail for DeVries and his staff. But if Indiana is able to land a commitment from Wabbington later this year, it would be a momentous victory for DeVries. Indiana basketball fans will want to keep a close eye on Wabbington's visit when September rolls around.
