Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers are looking to score another big recruiting victory. Cignetti secured a verbal commitment from 3-star CB Chris Bradley over the weekend, and now he is on the prowl for another commit.
The Hoosiers have been in pursuit of elite 4-star LB Jalaythan Mayfield for a while, and are still firmly in the mix. On Monday, Mayfield announced that Indiana is among his list of finalists along with Georgia and Miami (FL).
Lane Kiffin and LSU could derail Indiana's pursuit of 5-star target Monshun Sales
Cignetti has already landed four blue chip prospects in Indiana's 2027 recruiting class, and adding Mayfield to the mix would continue Cignetti's recruiting momentum this offseason. Mayfield has announced his decision date, and Hoosier football fans won't have to wait long to find out where he is heading.
4-star LB Jalaythan Mayfield to announce commitment on Friday
According to Rivals, Mayfield is set to make his commitment decision known this Friday, June 19. That decision date comes much sooner than anticipated, as Mayfield was originally set to announce his decision later this summer on July 17.
Given his recent visit to Bloomington and the sudden change in his timeline, could Cignetti be on the verge of landing another blue chip prospect?

Mayfield is one of the most coveted defensive prospects who remains uncommitted in the 2027 recruiting cycle. He is ranked as the No. 228 overall player and the No. 20 linebacker in the country for the 2027 class according to Rivals, and is the No. 8 overall player hailing from the state of North Carolina.
Jalaythan Mayfield would provide a big boost to Indiana's 2027 recruiting class
Indiana's 2027 recruiting class is looking strong, as it currently ranks as the No. 31 class in the country according to Rivals. The Hoosiers have moved back multiple spots in the rankings over the last week, but a commitment from Mayfield could change that.
The Hoosiers seem to be in a solid position to land the highly-touted LB, as the On3/Rivals' Recruiting Prediction Machine currently gives Indiana a strong 90.3% chance to land a commitment from Mayfield. His other finalists consisting of Georgia and Miami (FL) have just a 2.3% chance and 1.4% chance respectively.
Landing their 5th blue chip prospect in the 2027 class would help the Hoosiers keep up with other teams in the Big Ten. As it stands, Indiana currently trails Ohio State (No. 6), Oregon (No. 8), USC (No. 9), Michigan (No. 12), UCLA (No. 15), Nebraska (No. 17), Penn State (No. 21), Washington (No. 23), Wisconsin (No. 24), and Minnesota (No. 28) in the Rivals national recruiting rankings. Given Cignetti's elite success and IU's historic 16-0 National Championship-winning season last year, it is a bit surprising to see so many other Big Ten teams ahead of IU.
When it comes to Mayfield's finalists, Miami (FL) owns the No. 2-ranked class in the country while Georgia is No. 13. Hoosier fans are hoping that Cignetti and company can deliver a tough defeat to Mario Cristobal and Kirby Smart by receiving a commitment from Mayfield on Friday.
