Curt Cignetti has not shied away about his approach to the non-conference, and his strategy has proven to be effective. When looking at Indiana's upcoming non-conference schedule to begin the 2026 season, each game is extremely manageable. After facing North Texas in Week 1 and Howard in Week 2, Cignetti and the Hoosiers will wrap up their non-conference slate with a home matchup against Western Kentucky on September 19.

The Hilltoppers have found consistent success under head coach Tyson Helton, and it's not a stretch to consider them a Group of 6 powerhouse. With that in mind, the Hoosiers should not take this WKU team lightly.

WKU head coach Tyson Helton is a consistent winner

Since taking over the Hilltopper program back in 2019, Helton has won 8+ games in 6 of his 7 seasons. He's compiled an overall record of 57-36 (.613), which includes a strong 40-15 record (.727) in C-USA play.

Helton has led WKU to bowl games in all 7 of his seasons in Bowling Green, and is a strong 5-2 in those contests. Last season, WKU posted a 9-4 record in a season that culminated with a win over Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl.

Helton is known for his high-flying passing attack and has made a habit of producing strong QBs at Western Kentucky. Most notably, he has recruited and developed players such as Bailey Zappe, Austin Reed, and Caden Veltkamp. Now it's sophomore Rodney Tisdale's turn, and if things are anything like they've been in recent seasons, Helton will have him ready to shine.

The Hilltoppers excel when it matters most

Last season, the Hilltoppers were at their best when it mattered most. In the 4th quarter, WKU out-scored its opponents 100-41. That means that they are never out of it.

Sure there are plenty of new faces on the roster, but Helton's culture and winning resume shows that his team is capable of being a thorn in the Hoosiers' side. Even Cignetti's squad gets up big and seems to have the game in hand, they should not take their foot off the gas.

Indiana has had some close calls with WKU in recent years

This Week 3 matchup won't be the first time Helton faces Indiana as the head man at Western Kentucky.

Back in the 2021 season, WKU nearly pulled off an upset against the Tom Allen-led Hoosiers. On September 25, WKU gave IU all it could handle in a narrow 33-31 Hoosier win at Memorial Stadium. Zappe completed 31 of his 44 pass attempts for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions in that contest.

Indiana's chances to land Monshun Sales over top contender just got even better

A year later in 2022, the Hoosiers and Hilltoppers needed overtime to decide their September 17 matchup in Bloomington. Indiana ultimately prevailed by a score of 33-30. A lot has changed for Indiana since then, and Cignetti obviously has the IU program in a much better spot. But that history is definitely worth considering when the Hilltoppers come to town on September 19.

All things considered, Western Kentucky is Indiana's toughest non-conference game. It's still an extremely winnable matchup and the Hoosiers are likely to be large favorites. But they can't overlook WKU with Big Ten play starting up the following week.
