Indiana's 2026-27 roster is primarily made up of transfers. Darian DeVries brought in an impressive portal class this offseason, and their collective performance will play a big role in Indiana's outlook this season.
With that being said, if the Hoosiers are going to take a big step forward in Year 2 of the DeVries era, IU's incoming freshmen will likely need to contribute as well. One name to keep an eye on is Vaughn Karvala, who has been making a strong first impression in Bloomington.
Vaughn Karvala set to begin freshman season with plenty of hype
Karvala's prep career began at Oregon High School in Wisconsin and concluded at Bella Vista Prep in Arizona. He broke Oregon High School's all-time scoring record and then helped lead Bella Vista Prep to multiple championships this spring. Those included titles at the Nike EYBL Scholastic Conference Championship as well as the Chipotle Nationals at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, IN.
Owning a 6'7" 190-pound frame, Karvala arrived in Bloomington as the No. 23 power forward and No. 62 overall player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He committed to the Hoosiers on November 1 and signed a few weeks later on November 15. Looking to carve out a role in DeVries' system, Hoosier fans are fired up to see what Karvala can do during his first season with the Cream and Crimson.
Vaughn Karvala can do a little bit of everything for the Hoosiers
When first watching Karvala play, the first thing you notice is his elite athleticism. He moves quickly, is balanced and smooth with the ball, and can make plays above the rim on both ends of the floor. That athleticism produced plenty of above the rim highlights during his high school career.
Latest comments from Indiana target Micah Mohler will have Hoosier fans fired up
Karvala is also an effective scorer and maintains an aggressive mindset when driving to the rim. He can also stretch the floor and knock down shots from the outside. In fact, he takes pride in his shooting ability from distance.
“I know my athleticism catches the eye a bunch,” Karvala said when speaking to the media last week. “But I can still shoot it.”
But if Karvala is going to see playing time this season as a true freshmen, more strength is needed. "The biggest thing for me is just putting on weight,” Karvala told Inside The Hall. “That’s my biggest thing, getting stronger, trying to play with these guys that are three, four years older than me. I have to get stronger, I have to get faster and everything.”
Today's era of college basketball is dominated by older, experience, and oftentimes, transfer players who have been around for multiple years. That is true for Indiana's 2026-27 roster, as six incoming transfers for the Hoosiers have multiple years of high-major experience under their belts. That makes it more and more difficult for incoming freshmen to make an immediate impact when arriving on campus.
But there is a lot to like about Karvala. His well-rounded skill set and strong athleticism give him plenty of potential, and if he continues getting stronger and impressing the coaching staff, he could find himself carving out a role this season.
