Curt Cignetti led the Indiana football program to a solid month of May on the recruiting trail. Cignetti landed six commitments last month, and slowly has Indiana's 2027 recruiting class moving up in the national rankings.
But it wasn't all winning for Cignetti and company last month. On May 18, Indiana suffered a tough recruiting blow when 4-star CB prospect Monsanna Torbert Jr abandoned his commitment to the Hoosiers.
Elite 2027 RB target drops major Indiana hint as decision date quickly approaches
Torbert was Indiana's highest-ranked recruit in its 2027 recruiting class. According to the 247Sports Composite, the Cincinnati native was ranked as the No. 16 cornerback and No. 139 overall player in the country at the time of his decommitment.
Torbert was the second 2027 Hoosier commit to change course, following 4-star WR Ja'Hyde Brown. Brown has since committed to Louisville, while Torbert is still searching for his new college football home.
Indiana decommit Monsanna Torbert Jr. continues his college football search
It's now been over three weeks since Torbert re-opened his recruitment, and the 4-star prospect is narrowing down his list of contenders.
On Monday, Torbert took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that he will no longer be taking an official visit to Notre Dame later this month. The visit was originally scheduled for June 19-21.

Indiana may not have Torbert committed anymore, but seeing him go to an in-state rival would have been salt in the wound for Hoosier football fans. At least now that won't happen, but Torbert could still end up with a Big Ten rival.
Michigan and Ohio State battling for Monsanna Torbert Jr.
As it stands, Ohio State could be considered the frontrunner in Torbert's re-opened recruitment. Torbert has taken two unofficial visits to Columbus in the last few months, and has an official visit lined up for this weekend starting on June 5. Ryan Day and the Buckeyes have been in the mix since the beginning, and will undoubtedly roll out the red carpet for Torbert this weekend.
The Michigan Wolverines are also still in the running. Torbert has an official visit to Ann Arbor lined up for later this month, and Kyle Whittingham has plenty of recruiting momentum. Whittingham has secured 15 commitments in the 2027 cycle, and 10 are considered blue chip recruits. Michigan's class is up to No. 14 in the country according to 247Sports, and Whittingham has the Wolverines on the verge of entering the top-10. Seeing Torbert leave Bloomington for Ann Arbor would not only hand IU a tough blow, but give Michigan even more momentum on the recruiting trail.
Losing Torbert hurts, but Cignetti has earned the trust of the IU football faithful. He led Indiana to a 16-0 season that culminated in a historic National Championship without a roster full of blue chip recruits, and IU has plenty of staying power with him leading the way. It will be interesting to see where Torbert ends up, but Indiana will be just fine moving forward.
