Indiana, Darian DeVries dealt tough setback in pursuit of familiar portal name

A reunion between Darian DeVries and Colby Garland would make a ton of sense for Indiana, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Darian DeVries and the Indiana Hoosiers enjoyed a sensational week in the transfer portal last week. DeVries has landed six portal commits so far, and all six players have a chance to make an immediate impact next season.

The Indiana Hoosiers might be closer to contention than anyone thinks

As the 2026-27 roster continues to round into form, one portal target seems to be eluding the Hoosiers. San Jose State point guard Colby Garland would be an ideal fit for Indiana for several reasons, but given the latest deveopments in his portal recruitment, it would be a bit surprising to see him end up in Bloomington.

Reunion between Colby Garland and Darian DeVries seems unlikely

Prior to spending this season with San Jose State, Garland played for DeVries at Drake during the 2023-24 season. He played in all 31 games and averaged 5.7 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs that season. He then transferred to Longwood before winding up at San Jose State.

The native of Magnolia, AR, enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2025-26. He averaged 20.3 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game en route to earning Third Team All-Mountain West honors. Now looking for a new college basketball home once again, a reunion with DeVries in Bloomington would make some sense.

Indiana has already landed a portal point guard in the form of Markus Burton, but you can never have enough depth. Given his previous ties to DeVries, Garland seems like an ideal candidate to provide solid and experienced depth to IU's back court for next season.

But Garland has yet to visit Indiana this portal season and continues to rack up visits with other teams. He visited the Oregon Ducks on Sunday, and they are desperate for a point guard. As it stands, the Ducks appear to be the front-runners, which would mean Garland could potentially suit up against the Hoosiers during Big Ten play in 2026-27.

Other teams involved in the pursuit of Garland's services include Creighton and USC. The 6'1" 190-pound playmaker visited Creighton and conducted a zoom meeting with USC last week.

Garland is ranked as the No. 75 overall player and No. 15 point guard in the portal according to 247Sports. It would be a tough miss for DeVries, but Indiana's portal class is already among the best in the country and has Hoosier fans fired up for the fall.
