The Indiana football program has never signed a 5-star recruit out of high school in the ratings era. But given the overwhelming success Curt Cignetti has orchestrated in Bloomington, that could be changing soon.
Cignetti and the Hoosiers have hosted multiple 5-star recruits for visits throughout the spring, and while a 5-star commitment hasn't come yet, Cignetti has IU well-positioned to make program history with an in-state product.
WR Monshun Sales is among the most coveted recruits in the country for the 2027 class, and Indiana is firmly in the race to land his services. Hailing from Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Sales is ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the state of Indiana and the No. 1 wide receiver in the country according to 247Sports. In addition, he is ranked as the No. 9 overall player in the 2027 cycle.
Sales took an official visit to Indiana earlier in the spring and was in Tuscaloosa for an official visit with Alabama last weekend. Following that visit, recruiting experts still have the Hoosiers listed as the frontrunners in Sales' closely-followed recruitment.
Indiana in the driver's seat to land 5-star WR Monshun Sales
Alabama may not have gained as much ground on Sales during his visit as initally thought. Following his highly-anticipated trip to Tuscaloosa, recruiting experts still have the Crimson Tide trailing the Hoosiers in Sales' recruiting race.
According to Rivals Industry Consensus, Indiana has an 82.4% chance to land a commitment from Sales. Conversly, Alabama is listed with a lowly 1.6% chance. Interestingly enough, Alabama is also trailing Ohio State (4.1%) and Michigan (2.0%) in Sales' recruitment.
3 ways Curt Cignetti can make history by landing 5-star WR Monshun Sales
Last month on May 14, both Greg Smith and Steve Wiltfong of Rivals logged predictions for Sales to end up in Bloomington. Wiltfong's predictions are hitting at an impressive rate of 92.08%, which gives Hoosier fans even more confidence at this point in time.
A lot can happen over the next few months, as Sales still has official visits lined up for Texas, Ohio State, and Miaim (FL). But given the recruiting momentum that Cignetti and IU have right now, as well as their strong relationship with Sales, Hoosier fans have to be feeling good about their chances of landing the in-state 5-star talent.
Securing a commitment from Sales would push Indiana up in the recruiting rankings
As it stands, Indiana's 2027 recruiting class is ranked No. 30 in the country according to Rivals. The class features 11 total players and three blue chip prospects in the form of 4-star OT Mason McDermott, 4-star EDGE Myles Smith, and 4-star EDGE Reinaldo Perez.
If Cignetti is able to seal the deal with Sales, it would undoubtedly skyrocket Indiana up in the national recruting rankings. The 6'5" 200-pound wideout is the type of players that defines a recruiting class, and his potential arrival in Bloomington would show that IU is now a recruitng force when it comes to blue chip prospects.
