Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers have missed an opportunity to land a highly-coveted blue chip prospect to their 2027 recruiting class.

Hailing from Buffalo, NY, 4-star RB Elijah Kimble is one of the top RB recruits in the country. He is ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the state of New York and the No. 23 running back in the country according to Rivals. With his list of finalists including Indiana, Syracuse, Ohio State, and North Carolina, the 5'10" 180-pound playmaker announced his commitment decision on Friday night.

Kimble ultimately chose to stay in-state and play at Syracuse. He instantly becomes Syracuse's highest-ranked 2027 commit.

Playing for Canisius High School, Kimble rushed for 1,726 yards and 23 scores on the ground last season as a junior. His list of offers exceeded 40 schools, and he spent the spring taking Official Visits to all of his finalists.

He was in Bloomington to visit the Hoosiers over the weekend of April 17, but Cignetti and company ultimately weren't able to beat out Fran Brown and the Orange for the New York native.

Indiana can't add 4-star RB Elijah Kimble to 2027 recruiting class

Missing out on Kimble means Indiana's 2027 recruiting class still features just a single running back. That comes in the form of 3-star prospect Da'Jon Talley-Rhodes, who is ranked as the No. 32 running back in the country according to Rivals.

The historic success that Indiana has seen under Cignetti has unsurprisingly caught the attention of blue chip recruits across the country. Indiana used to be an afterthought when it came to landing blue chip prospects, but that has changed over the last two years.

Cignetti has already landed six recruits with 4-star rankings in Indiana's 2027 recruiting class. EDGE Myles Smith, LB Jalaythan Mayfield, OT Mason McDermott, and DL Reinaldo Lopez are all rated as 4-star prospects by Rivals. Furthermore, S Brady Scott recently earned a 4th-star from ESPN and WR Branden Sharpe gained 4-star status from 247Sports earlier this summer. They missed out on Kimble's services, but securing 4-star commitments is becoming more and more normal for the Hoosiers under Cignetti's leadership.

Despite falling short in the hunt for Kimble, Indiana still boasts a Top-30 recruiting class for 2027. The Hoosiers currently own the No. 29 spot in the Rivals Recruiting Rankings, and that number could improve in the upcoming weeks depending on the decisions of other top prospects. Most notably, Indiana is anxiously awaiting a decision from 5-star WR Monshun Sales, who is ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Indiana and No. 8 overall player in the country by Rivals.
