Former Hoosier standout takes next step in basketball journey with new coaching role

In the world of basketball, it is extremely common for players to pursue a coaching career when their playing career is over. That has been the case for a plethora of former Hoosiers throughout the history of the Indiana basketball program. Notable former Hoosiers to become head coaches include Steve Alford, Randy Wittman, Wike Woodson, and Dan Dakich, among many others.

The player to coach career path is a common sight at every level of basketball, and one former Hoosier is now primed to continue his coaching career in the WNBA.

Former Hoosier Will Sheehey joins New York Liberty coaching staff

On Wednesday, the New York Liberty announced their full coaching staff for the 2026 season. Joining the staff as an assistant coach is former Indiana standout Will Sheehey, who played 130 games for the Hoosiers from 2010-14.

Sheehey started 50 of his 130 career games in Bloomington, including all 31 games his senior season in 2013-14. He steadily improved both his minutes and his production throughout his time with the cream and crimson. Sheehey's scoring average increased from 4.8 points per game in his freshman season to 11.4 points per game during his senior season.

In his career, the Stuart, FL native averaged 8.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 48.6% from the field. His best year as a Hoosier came during his senior season in 2013-14 when he played over 30 minutes per game and averaged 11.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

After Indiana, Sheehey played professionally from 2014-2020. He played for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Los Angeles D-Fenders, and Raptors 905 in the NBA G-League, as well as playing internationally in Montenegro, Greece, France, Portugal, and Germany.

Sheehey entered the coaching ranks in 2022 with the Golden State Warriors. There, he served as a player development assistant in 2022-23 and as an assistant coach in 2023-24. He most recently served as an assistant coach and head of player development for Denmark’s Bakken Bears.

The head coach for the Liberty is four-time NBA Champion Chris DeMarco. Sheehey's first regular season game with the Liberty comes on Friday, May 8 with a matchup against the Connecticut Sun.
