The college basketball transfer portal is set to open on Tuesday, and players across the country are already announcing their intentions to enter. Darian DeVries figures to utilize the portal heavily, as Indiana is losing nearly 78% of the minutes played and 84% of the scoring from this past season. As it stands, only Trent Sisley has announced his intention to return to Bloomington next season.
The miss that still stings: Dusty May and Indiana’s big “What If”
Not only are Indiana basketball fans tracking IU's portal moves, but former Hoosiers who are also on the move. Among those players is Gabe Cupps, who spent two seasons with Indiana before transferring to Ohio State following the 2024-25 season. But after one season in Columbus, Cupps is on the move once again.
Former Hoosier Gabe Cupps to enter the transfer portal after one season at Ohio State
According to Joe Tipton of On3, Cupps is hitting the portal for a second time. The 6'2" redshirt sophomore has two years of eligibility remaining.

Hailing from Dayton, OH, Cupps came to Indiana as a 4-star prospect and was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio in 2022. He began his collegiate career with the Hoosiers in 2023 and as then-head coach Mike Woodson described, was “thrown to the wolves” during his freshman season.
Cupps appeared in 33 games with 22 starts for the Hoosiers in 2023-24, and averaged 2.6 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while playing 21.7 minutes per game. During his sophomore season in 2024-25, he appeared in just four games before suffering a season-ending meniscus injury.
Cupps then hit the portal and landed at Ohio State, with his commitment to the Buckeyes coming mere hours before IU hired Darian DeVries. Cupps saw limited playing time during his lone season in Columbus, as he never started and averaged just 1.7 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists over 33 games with the Buckeyes.
Ohio State made the NCAA Tournament but was bounced in the Round of 64 by TCU. Cupps played just five minutes in that contest.
Given his limited playing time, Cupps' decision to enter the portal isn't surprising. Cupps has a high basketball IQ and plays with great energy, but he hasn't been able to carve out a consistent role at the Big Ten level. It will be interesting to see where he ends up in this portal cycle.
