Darian DeVries has made multiple splashes in the transfer portal so far this offseason. Facing a roster rebuild with just one player returning from last year's team, DeVries has re-vamped Indiana's roster in a major way.

Indiana's portal class is headlined by Alabama power forward Aiden Sherrell and Notre Dame point guard Markus Burton. Together, they lead an IU portal class that is currently ranked No. 4 in the country by On3.

While DeVries has already landed his heavy-hitters in the portal this offseason, he is now prioritizing depth. His latest portal commit does exactly that.

Justin Monden commits to Indiana through the portal from Maryland Eastern Shore

On Tuesday afternoon, Indiana received a portal commitment from Maryland Eastern Shore guard Justin Monden. He is the seventh portal addition for the Hoosiers this offseason, and his presence brings Indiana's 2026-27 roster up to 12 players.

This past season, Monden averaged 6.0 points, 1.6 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game across 32 contests for the Hawks. Coming off the bench, the 6'0" guard shot 40.1% from the floor, 27.0% from beyond the arc, and 72.2% from the free throw line.

The 2025-26 season was his lone campaign with Maryland Eastern Shore. Monden previously spent two seasons in the Division II ranks with Georgia Southwestern State. There, the Raleigh, NC native averaged 4.4 points per game as a freshman and 12.2 points per game as a sophomore.

He comes to Bloomington with one year of eligibility remaining, but that could change if the five-in-five eligibility rule passes.

Justin Monden brings depth to Indiana's backcourt in 2026-27

DeVries' offseason portal haul brought in multiple backcourt pieces that give the Hoosiers plenty of potential next season. Burton is the headliner of the backcourt, and he has been among the ACC's best scorers over the last three seasons. He figures to take on a leading role and serve as Indiana's floor general in 2026-27.

Other backcourt additions through the portal include shooting guard Jaeden Mustaf from Georgia Tech, shooting guard Bryce Lindsay from Villanova, and guard Darren Harris from Duke. All of those additions figure to see significant minutes next season, while Monden can be considered a depth piece.

You can never have enough depth. This past season, Indiana was too reliant on Lamar Wilkerson to generate scoring, as the role players behind him struggled with consistency. With a backcourt consisting of Burton, Mustaf, Lindsay, and Harris, Indiana's scoring attack seems to be a bit more well-rounded.

Adding Monden to the mix gives IU an experience backup point guard that can bring plenty of quickness off the bench. He figures to be a role player for when Burton is on the bench and could even be a defensive spark with strong on-ball defense.

Indiana's roster for next season now sits at 12 players. The group consists of seven transfers, four incoming freshmen, and one returner from last season in the form of rising sophomore forward Trent Sisley.
