The Indiana Hoosiers have taken the college football world by storm under Curt Cignetti. The Hoosier head coach took over an overlooked program that had the most losses in college football history, and wasted no time turning it into a national powerhouse.

This past season, Cignetti led IU to its best season in program history. The Hoosiers went a perfect 16-0, won the Big Ten Championship over Ohio State, and won the College Football Playoff National Championship after picking up wins in the Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl. It was a historic season on many fronts, and Cignetti's tenure as a whole continues to make history on many different levels.

Why Curt Cignetti could be building something bigger with IU’s 2027 recruiting class

Over two seasons in Bloomington, Cignetti has led Indiana to its only seasons of 10+ wins in program history. He's also matched the amount of bowl wins Indiana had prior to his arrival (3), and has nearly already matched Indiana's amount of weeks spent ranked in the AP Poll. The Hoosiers were featured in the poll 21 times before Cignetti arrived, and have been ranked in the AP Poll 19 times under his leadership.

Cignetti now owns a remarkable 27-2 overall record at the helm of the IU football program. Looking ahead, the Hoosiers show no signs of slowing down in Year 3 of the Cignetti era.

Curt Cignetti and Indiana primed for another big season

Cignetti's winning formula gives the Hoosiers plenty of staying power in the upcoming 2026 season. Cignetti doesn't need a roster full of blue chip recruits to be successful. Instead, he focuses on finding the right players and putting them in the best position to succeed. He puts an emphasis on finding experienced, under-the-radar players who can turn into stars under his leadership. So far, that formula has worked wonders in Bloomington.

Cignetti has also been extremely effective when it comes to finding and bringing in transfer portal talent. In today's world of college football, that is a big emphasis for programs across the country. But nobody has mastered that process quite like Cignetti has at Indiana. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin likes to call himself "The Portal King," but Cignetti's body of work speaks for itself and makes him the real portal king.

As the 2026 season draws nearer, Indiana is now a program that is expected to qualify for the College Football Playoff and compete for a national title. What a difference two years makes. When Cignetti first took over, reaching this level of new heights was considered a fever dream for Hoosier fans. But now it is a reality. There's a very real chance that Indiana enters the new season ranked as the No. 1 team in the country in the Preseason AP Top-25 Poll, which would continue to set the bar for what Cignetti can do in Bloomington.

With Cignetti leading the way, the Indiana football programs is in great hands. More history could be made in 2026, as Cignetti has the Hoosiers well-positioned for another sensational season.
