Curt Cignetti has proved that he doesn't need a roster full of blue chip recruits to win a National Championship. Cignetti led the Hoosiers to an undefeated season and national title last season with a roster mainly comprised of overlooked and under-the-radar prospects. He then developed that talent and put his players in the best position to succeed. Obviously, that philosophy worked out.
Throughout his time in Bloomington, Cignetti has made it abundantly clear that he is not focused on finding the best recruits, but rather, he is focused on finding the right recruits for his program. For Cignetti, that means not compromising on a handful of core traits.

The 2026 Big Ten Media Days took place in Chicago this week, and Cignetti delivered plenty of memorable sound bites. From speaking on his confidence to throwing jabs at the SEC, Cignetti made plenty of headlines throughout the week.

But one of Cignetti's most insightful moments of the week came when discussing his non-negotiables when it comes to recruiting.
“If I have a guy that consistently cannot do his best, cannot be on time, cannot rub off positively on others, is uncoachable, he’s not going to be in my program,” said Cignetti at Big Ten Media Days.

Cignetti's leadership style is well-documented. His trademark no-nonsense approach and process-driven discipline has completely transformed the Hoosier football program, and he hopes to keep it that way.
Whether it be through the transfer portal or in the high school recruiting ranks, Cignetti has made it clear that hard work, discipline, having a positive impact, and being coachable are traits that matter more than any 4 or 5-star rating. If a player isn't going to meet his standard, Cignetti doesn't want him around.
Cignetti's recruiting approach is paying off in the best way possible
So far, Cignetti's approach has delivered tremendous results in Bloomington. Cignetti is 27-2 since taking over for the program with the most losses in college football history. He has lost just a single Big Ten game, and has delivered a Big Ten title, Heisman Trophy winner, and wins in the Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl en route to a historic National Championship. Not too shabby.
Given all of the elite success Cignetti has had at Indiana, there isn't a need to change his approach. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Sure, it's true that Indiana is now on the map of blue chip prospects across the country. Cignetti even landed Indiana's first-ever 5-star high school commit in the form of WR Monshun Sales earlier this month. But Cignetti's standard still applies. If a blue chip recruit doesn't meet his expectations, Cignetti has no problem letting him go elsewhere. Instead, he'll bring in a lower-ranked and overlooked recruit who is a better fit for the program.
With Cignetti leading the way, Hoosier football fans have plenty of reasons for optimism in 2026 and beyond.
