Indiana Basketball: Hoosiers could get some size with under the radar transfer
By Adam Childs
The Indiana basketball team is looking for some size and rebounding help and could get it with the newest transfer in the portal.
We have explored the possibility of the Hoosiers going after some transfers to fill their last scholarship spots after the transfer of Damezi Anderson and Justin Smith, but most have been backcourt options. They would have all been good additions to Indiana, but the Hoosiers are not a big team right now so a big man might be a better option.
That big man may have just entered the transfer portal. Justyn Mutts for Delaware just put his name into the portal and could be exactly what the Hoosiers are looking for. He is a 6’7″ rebounding force and could help fill the needs of this upcoming Hoosier team.
Archie Miller is bringing some good backcourt help with the 2020 class, but getting another big man would certainly help. The best part of bringing in Mutts is that he is eligible to play next year as a graduate transfer and has two years of eligibility left.
It doesn’t happen very often when you can get a transfer and have two years with them. Mutts would help fill a big need down low and could be a great combo with Trayce Jackson-Davis down low.
Mutts is not an outside threat but is a force down low. He averaged 12.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last year. The scoring is great, but the ability to get inside and gobble up rebounds would be huge for the Hoosiers.
Mutts played just one year for the Blue Hens after transferring from High Point. He was mildly successful in his freshman year scoring six points a game while also grabbing just over four rebounds a game.
Mid-major players have had some decent success jumping up to high-major programs, but it is still a risk bringing one in. But with Mutts size he is set up to be able to handle himself against the big boys.
While we still feel LJ Figueroa would be a good fit for the Hoosiers, Mutts would fit a bigger need. The Hoosiers would probably have a better shot of bringing him to Bloomington as they have a lot to offer him. A great frontcourt mate in TJD and a young talented team ready to make a run in the Big Ten.
That opportunity could be enough to lure him to Indiana. Miller hasn’t seemed to be very interested in the transfers, but maybe a big man of Mutts caliber should be enough for him to make a run at him. Plus getting him for two years is a major plus.
