On Saturday afternoon, Riley Nowakowski became the sixth Indiana Hoosier to be selected in the 2026 NFL Draft. Nowakowski is set to head to Pittsburgh after being selected in the 5th Round with the 169th overall pick in the draft.

Nowakowski is a great fit for the Pittsburgh offense for several reasons, and he should have every opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Riley Nowakowski's versatility is perfect for the Steelers

First, the Steelers needed a tight end. Both Jonnu Smith and Connor Heyward are now gone, and the Steelers were on the search for a tight end complement for Pat Freiermuth. They found it in Nowakowski. This past season, Nowakowski emerged as a reliable target for Fernando Mendoza, as he hauled in 32 passes for 387 yards with two touchdowns. He spent his first five seasons of college football with the Wisconsin Badgers, and collected just 18 total catches during his time in Madison.

Nowakowski brings plenty of athleticism, and versatility to The Steel City. He can operate as a tight end, fullback, and H-back while also offering plenty of value on special teams.

As Tommy Jaggi of Still Curtain notes, with a 6'2'' 250-pound frame and just 31 3/4'' arms and 8 3/4'' hands, Nowakowski is built more like a middle linebacker than a tight end. The Steelers can use him in multiple roles, but his size and physicality could lead to him primarily taking on a leading blocking role up front.

Nowakowski is also an older prospect, as he is set to turn 24 years old in June. His age may have led to him not being selected until Day 3 of the draft, but by taking him in the fifth round, it seems that the Steelers plan to give him every opportunity to make the roster out of camp.
