Why one overlooked group of Hoosiers is set to take the world by storm next season

Not many people are talking about this area of Indiana's roster...

A lot of attention is being paid to Indiana's offense this offseason. The talk is justified, as the Hoosiers have a lot of new faces on the offensive side of the ball.

Most notably, the Hoosiers are looking to replace the production brought to the table by Heisman Trophy-winning QB Fernando Mendoza, WR Omar Cooper Jr, WR Elijah Sarratt, RB Kaelon Black, RB Roman Hemby, TE Riley Nowakowski and C Pat Coogan from this past season. That is a tall task, but Cignetti has revamped IU's offense with a number of impact transfer additions, including TCU QB Josh Hoover and Michigan State WR Nick Marsh.

While Indiana's new-look offense is receiving plenty of attention this offseason, one position group flying under the radar is the Hoosier defensive front.

Indiana's defensive front returns plenty of production from last season

While Mendoza and company were garnering plenty of attention on offense, the Indiana defensive front played a massive role in Indiana's National Championship-winning season. The Hoosiers finished second in all of college football with 46.0 sacks last season. They needed 16 games to reach that total, but Indiana still averaged just under 3.0 sacks per game and put consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks all season long.

Indiana fans can already circle the hardest game on the 2026 football schedule

Looking ahead to the 2026 season, the IU defensive front has plenty of returning production coming back. Specifically, four of Indiana's top five sack leaders from this past season are back in Bloomington. LB Rolijah Hardy, LB Isaiah Jones, DL Tyrique Tucker, and DL Mario Landino are all back, which gives the Hoosier pass rush plenty of potential this fall.

Hardy is the headliner of that returning group, as he paced the Hoosiers with 8.0 sacks and earned second-team All-Big Ten from the conference media and coaches panels. Jones wasn't far behind with 7.0 sacks of his own, while Tucker collected 6.0 sacks and Landino had 5.0.

Indiana's pass rush has elite potential in 2026

With so much returning production from last year, the IU pass rush has the potential to take the college football world by storm next season. Not many teams out there can boast that kind of returning production up front, which gives Indiana a big advantage when it comes to rushing the passer.

Hoosier defensive coordinator Bryant Haines has turned Indiana's defense into a force to be reckoned with, and there's not much to suggest that things will be any different in 2026. Haines has been a part of all four of Cignetti's head coaching staffs, and has been with Cignetti for 11 seasons. Cignetti first hired Haines to be his defensive line coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania back in 2014-15. That familiarity is obviously serving btoh coaches well in Bloomington, and has helped produce elite results on the defensive side of the ball.

Looking ahead, Indiana's pass rush will be fun to watch in 2026. As they begin their quest to defend their national title, Hoosier football fans have a lot to be fired up about.
