After an underwhelming first season at the helm of the Indiana basketball program, Darian DeVries and his staff have plenty of work to in re-shaping Indiana's roster for the 2026-27 season. The Hoosiers are set to lose their top five scorers from this past season, as well as six of their top seven scorers.Â
In total, Indiana's seniors accounted for 65.8 of its 78.2 points per game this season, which is 84.1% of the scoring. Of the seven players slated to return, only Nick Dorn and Trent Sisley averaged double-digit minutes per game this past season.Â
Big transfer portal target can solve fatal flaw from Darian DeVries' first year at IU
With the main rotation of players gone, and the incoming recruiting class featuring just three players, DeVries will likely lean on the transfer portal a decent amount when constructing Indiana's roster.
There have been some changes to the college basketball transfer portal timeline for this spring. The changes were approved by the NCAA's Division I cabinet in January, which moved to push back the college basketball portal window.
College basketball transfer portal opens on April 7
The portal will now be open for a 15-day period following the National Championship Game in Indianapolis on April 6. Thus, the portal will open on April 7 and remain open until April 21. Previously, the window began after the second round of the NCAA Tournament and was open for 30 days. The new timeline allows all games to be completed before the portal madness begins.Â
While the portal doesn't officially pen until April 7, players can announce their intent to enter the portal at any time. Then once April 7 rolls around, they can make it official by entering up until April 21 when it closes.
Once in the portal, players can sign with a new team at any time. There is no official deadline to commit to a new team, although players must generally be enrolled at their new school early enough to participate in summer workouts and/or fall practices.Â
Hoosier fans will be monitoring IU's transfer portal activity closely
DeVries' first season in Bloomington has not gone as planned. DeVries' vision of bringing in experienced veterans through the portal in Year 1 didn't go as planned, and now he has multiple glaring issues to address heading into Year 2.
Most notably, the Hoosiers need a true center as well as a versatile point guard capable of being a floor general. Additional shooting guard help would also be beneficial, as the main group of guards from this season are out of eligibility.
With Selection Sunday less than 24 hours away, the Hoosiers continue to move further and further down the wrong side of the bubble. As it stands, it seems that IU will miss the NCAA Tournament for the 8th time in the last 10 seasons.
