Michigan coaching shock would give Indiana basketball some much-needed relief

Indiana is gearing up for a much better campaign in 2026-27, and this Michigan coaching bombshell would make life in the Big Ten a bit easier for the Hoosiers.

There's no denying that the Michigan Wolverines have become the cream of the crop in the Big Ten under Dusty May.

Over his two seasons in Ann Arbor, May has accumulated an overall record of 64-13 (.699) to go along with a stellar 33-7 (.825) mark in Big Ten play. The Wolverines were the best team in the country for the majority of this past season, which culminated in a National Championship on April 6.

May has re-tooled his roster with a strong transfer portal class and has Michigan well-positioned to compete for another title next season. As Darian DeVries prepares for his second season at the helm of the Indiana basketball program, it's clear that Michigan presents a major threat.

Dusty May is drawing interest from multiple NBA teams

On Tuesday, Front Office Sports dropped a bombshell that May is garnering plenty of interest from the NBA. The report mentions that multiple franchises are interested in May's services, but two teams mentioned specifically are the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors.

The report also mentions that there is NBA interest on May's part, which adds even more intrigue to the situation. May's stock is extremely high after the remarkable job he has done in Ann Arbor, so if he did have NBA interests, it would make sense to make the jump now.

Indiana basketball fans would love to see Dusty May leave Michigan for the NBA

As Hoosier fans know, May has strong ties to the state of Indiana. He was born in Terre Haute and graduated from Eastern Green High School in Bloomfield. He then attended IU, and was a team manager under legendary head coach Bob Knight from 1996-2000. In the early stages of his coaching career, he was a video coordinator and administrative assistant for the Hoosiers from 2002-05.

Hoosier fans would have loved to see May come to Bloomington after his tenure at Florida Atlantic, but at the time, Indiana decided to give Mike Woodson one more year. The timing then wasn't right for May to come to IU last offseason, and the Hoosiers ended up hiring Darian DeVries.

Now that May has built a National Championship team at Michigan, it would be advantageous for Hoosier basketball fans to see May leave Ann Arbor for the NBA. The Wolverines had fallen on tough times under Juwan Howard before May came around, and seeing Michigan take a significant step back with May gone would be a welcome sight for a lot of Big Ten teams. The Wolverines also convincingly beat the Hoosiers by a score of 86-72 back on January 20.

It's already painful enough for IU basketball fans to see one of their own win a National Championship with a different Big Ten team. Seeing May continue his dominance in Ann Arbor would only put salt in the wound for Indiana. If he decides to take an NBA job, you won't find any IU basketball fans complaining about it.
