Former Hoosier RB Kaelon Black put forth an impressive NFL debut on Thursday night. Black ran 14 times for 65 yards while also adding a catch for 5 yards, and his efforts played a key role in the 49ers' 27-7 win over the Rams. It was a bigger role than many expected the third round draft pick to take on in the season opener, but Black made the most of his opportunity.
Black entered Week 1 as San Francisco's RB2 behind Christian McCaffrey, who is among the most electric playmakers in the league. That is––when he is healthy. Injuries have impacted McCaffrey's career in a major way, which makes Black's role on the San Francisco depth chart especially important.
In the season opener, Black and McCaffrey split the workload evenly, with Black recording 14 rushing opportunities compared to 10 for McCaffrey. Once the passing game was factored in, both players finished with 15 total touches on the night. While some McCaffrey fans (and fantasy football managers) may be concerned about the shared workload, Black establishing a consistent role in the San Francisco backfield could actually help McCaffrey this season.
A steady role for Kaelon Black can keep Christian McCaffrey fresh
Since the 2020 season, McCaffrey has missed a significant amount of time with different injuries. He played just 3 games in 2020, 7 games in 2021, and 4 games in 2024. He is now into his age-30 season, and is coming off a campaign in which he set career-highs in rushing attempts (311) and total touches (413). Including the postseason, McCaffrey saw more than 450 total touches last season. Simply put, that may not be sustainable.
That's where Black comes in. If the former Hoosier great is able to continue providing the 49ers with steady production in the backfield, it can help McCaffrey stay fresh. Black may not continue to get the majority of the rushing attempts and an even 50% cut of total touches, but seeing him take on a regular role could be very beneficial.

It was an effective strategy in the season opener, as McCaffrey wasn't asked to carry too much of the workload. In turn, he showed some explosiveness that wasn't always there last season because of his high usage.
Explosive plays in both the running and passing game are what McCaffrey such a special player, and the 49ers will undoubtedly want to put him in the best possible position to keep those kinds of plays coming early and often in 2026. The bet way to do that may be in the form of giving Black a consistent role to help ease McCaffrey's burden.
But no matter what role the 49ers decide to put Black into, it's clear that he is capable of making an immediate impact as a rookie. He orchestrated a sensational debut against one of the NFL's best defenses, and helped lead his team to a 20-point win against a division rival. Hoosier fans have a lot to be excited about when it comes to watching Black's NFL career take shape this season.
