Fernando Mendoza will always be a legend in Bloomington. The Hoosier QB led Indiana to its best season in program history which culminated in a perfect 16-0 record and the school's first-ever National Championship in football. It was something IU football fans truly never thought they would see.

On the field, Mendoza's elite skill set is fueled by a tremendous football IQ, pin-point accuracy, strong athleticism, and NFL-ready frame at 6'5" 230 pounds. Off the field, Mendoza possesses off-the-charts intangibles that include an extreme dedication to preparation. The talent is important, but those off the field characteristics have made Mendoza into even more of a legend -- and a better quarterback.

Indiana fans know all about Mendoza's work ethic, and now Curt Cignetti is peeling back the curtain on what drives Mendoza's dedication and competitive fire.

Curt Cignetti gives an inside look at what drives Fernando Mendoza's competitiveness

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, a main topic of conversation between Cignetti and Eisen was Mendoza's approach to the game. Not surprisingly, Cignetti gave a glowing review of Mendoza's competitiveness and work ethic.

"We've all seen him interview. He can come off a little geeky," said Cignetti. "The guy's a lion as a competitor. He is ferocious, tough, and makes plays with his arms and his legs."

Mendoza's interviews have become famous across the football universe, especially during Indiana's run in the College Football Playoff. Mendoza displays a deep love for the game, love for his teammates, and great appreciation to have the opportunity to do what he does. It's also clear that Mendoza prepares as much possible to be the best that he -- and his team -- can be.

"I've never been around a guy in 45 years that prepared like he did," Cignetti said when speaking to Eisen. "He covered every base and then some. I learned from him. You learn from the great ones. The level of detail and preparation and how it never ends."

Fernando Mendoza's work ethic and dedication is already making its way to the NFL

Not surprisingly, Mendoza was picked No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. As he looks to made an immediate impact at the next level, Mendoza's extreme dedication to preparation is already impressing Las Vegas head coach Klint Kubiak.

"He's working his tail off," Kubiak said to media members earlier this spring. "He's no B.S.; he's all ball...Anything that you put in front of him, he's going to attack it. Anything new, he spends extra time on. You can tell he fixes things from one day to the next."

Earlier this month, Mendoza missed out on Indiana's National Championship trip to the White House in order to continue training with his new team in Las Vegas. "I’m on the bottom of the totem pole here. I’ve got to prove myself,” Mendoza told the media. “I can’t miss practice. I don’t have the calendar, but as a rookie, I don’t think that’s a good look. I want to try to best serve my teammates, and I don’t know if that’d be accomplishing that goal.”

Mendoza's approach to his first season is on brand. He's staying true to himself and doing what he thinks is best for his team. Those traits are what made him a Heisman Trophy winner and National Champion, and will bode extremely well for him in the NFL.

Mendoza enters his rookie NFL season with plenty of hype, but he is more than capable of living up to it. It remains to be seen if he will be Las Vegas' Week 1 starter, but Hoosier fans are sure to be cheering him on regardless.
