Indiana Hoosier safety Louis Moore is suing the NCAA for extra eligibility, citing past precedent and $400,000 worth of potential earnings lost in NIL deals, as ESPN's Heather Dinich first reported on Saturday.

"“Louis Moore, a 24-year-old safety who has started games at both Ole Miss and Indiana, is suing the NCAA for another year of eligibility so he can finish his playing career with the Hoosiers, arguing that his time at Navarro Junior college in Texas should not count against him,” Dinich wrote. He cited the potential losses in earnings around $400k from NIL deals. Moore is currently enrolled at IU and trying to attend practice on Aug. 25. He and his attorneys cited legal precedent with Vandy QB Diego Pavia case.”"

Indiana football head coach Curt Cignetti told reporters Monday that he supports safety Louis Moore's decision to file a lawsuit against the NCAA last week after his waiver request for an additional year of eligibility was denied.

The 24-year-old safety, who would be entering his seventh collegiate season continues to practice with the team and compete for a starting role in the secondary, but his status for the start of the 2025 season is in doubt.

He's awaiting an initial hearing this week on the temporary restraining order (TRO) he filed against the NCAA in Dallas County District Court that would allow him to stay with the team once the academic term begins on August 25, 2025.

Moore originally signed with the Hoosiers in 2022 after attending Navarro (Texas) College from 2019-21 (the 2020 season was canceled in the COVID-19 pandemic season). He then returned to Bloomington after spending last season playing at Ole Miss.

According to an NCAA memo, the waiver extends an extra year of eligibility in 2025-26 to athletes who previously “competed at a non-NCAA school for one or more years” and otherwise would have exhausted their NCAA eligibility following the 2024-25 season.

At Ole Miss, Moore played 297 snaps in 10 games at free safety. He totaled 33 tackles including two for a loss and a half sack in 2024.

With Moore likely to miss the season, Byron Baldwin, Bryson Bonds and Devan Boykin will be competing for the starting free safety position.

The first day of the fall semester at IU Bloomington is Aug. 25, with the football season kicking off on August 30th against Old Dominion.
