The SEC push was too much for Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers to overcome.

After reeling off a perfect 16-0 season that culminated in a historic National Championship, one would think that Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers would be dominating the recruiting trail right now. Instead, Cignetti and company have had an up-and-down few weeks when it comes to building Indiana's 2027 recruiting class.

4-star WR Ja'Hyde Brown and 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr both abandoned their commitments to the Hoosiers in recent weeks. Their decommitments are tough losses, as Torbert and Hyde were Indiana's highest-ranked commits in the 2027 class.

Cignetti was able to get back on track by receiving a pair of commitments from 3-star DB Rico Jackson and 3-star OT Mason McDermott. However, Indiana's 2027 recruiting class currently ranks as the No. 48 class in the country according to 247Sports.

Cignetti had a chance to add to his 2027 class with the addition of RB Kelsey Gerald, but the 3-star playmaker will be SEC bound instead.

Indiana recruiting target RB Kelsey Gerald commits to Kentucky

3-star RB Kelsey Gerald had been a name on Indiana's radar for a while. Cignetti first offered the running back out of Lake Worth, FL back on February 11. Indiana was locked in a four-team recruiting battle for Gerlad's services over the last several months, and unfortunately, Cignetti and the Hoosiers came up short.

On Thursday, Rivals' Hayes Fawcett reported that Gerald has committed to the Kentucy Wildcats. He chose the Wildcats over other finalists Florida State, Auburn, and Indiana.

Gerald was scheduled to take an official visit to Bloomington later this month on May 29, but with his commitment to Kentucky, that will not be the case. Thus, IU's 2027 recruiting class will stay at six players for the time being.

Curt Cignetti has earned the trust of Indiana football fans on the recruiting trail

According to the Rivals Industry Ranking, Gerald is the No. 590 overall prospect and No. 50 RB in the 2027 recruiting class. He is also ranked as the No. 56 overall recruit in The Sunshine State.

Missing out to Kentucky is a bummer, but it's not going to break Indiana's 2027 recruiting class. Cignetti continues to build momentum after suffering a pair of setbacks, and Hoosier football fans have plenty of faith in his ability to deliver.

Cignetti's track record of winning speaks for itself -- just Google him. Over his two seasons in Bloomington, Cignetti has proven that he is an excellent evaluator of talent and has an effective formula in place for putting those talented players in the best possible positions to succeed. Indiana fans just have to trust the process.
