Darian DeVries and the Indiana Hoosiers are looking to take a big step forward in 2026-27. DeVries' first season in Bloomington ended in disappointing fashion, as the Hoosiers went 1-6 down the stretch and ultimately missed the NCAA Tournament. But a year of Big Ten experience and a revamped roster could have things looking up.
Furthermore, the Big Ten did Indiana some favors with the 2026-27 conference schedule. The official schedule for the upcoming season was released earlier this week, and Hoosier fans have to be liking what they are seeing.
The Hoosiers will once again play 20 Big Ten games, with 10 at home and 10 on the road. They will face seven teams just at home, seven teams just on the road, and three teams both at home and on the road. The matchups and locations that Indiana drew could pave the way for DeVries to make big improvements this season.
Indiana Basketball's 2026-27 Big Ten schedule
Here is a breakdown of which conference opponents Indiana will be facing from the comfort of Assembly Hall, and which matchups come on the road.
Home only: Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Rutgers, UCLA, and USC
Away only: Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Washington, and Wisconsin
Home and Away: Maryland, Northwestern, and Purdue
Getting three of the top teams in the conference––Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State–– at home is a major plus. The Hoosiers went 0-4 against those teams last season, and lost by an average of 16.5 points with no loss coming by less than 13 points. Three of those four games were on the road, so getting all three at home this season is a solid break. Indiana will also play each of those teams just once, so they don't have to worry about seeing them multiple times.
The road-only matchups are fairly manageable. They won't be easy, but the Hoosiers could have definitely gotten a worse draw. The toughest tests will come at Iowa and at Nebraska, while trips across the country to Oregon and Washington will undoubtedly present some challenges as well. Going up to Madison to face Wisconsin has been a nightmare in recent seasons, which is something DeVries will be looking to change.
But the real victory in this schedule comes in the form of Indiana's three home-and-home matchups. Drawing Maryland, Northwestern, and Purdue is a very generous slate.
Maryland went 4-16 and finished 17th in the Big Ten last season, while Northwestern went 5-15 and finished 15th. The Wildcats gave the Hoosiers problems, but it would be a bit surprising to see that in back-to-back seasons with a much-improved Indiana roster. Purdue is now without its core of Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn, which means the Boilermakers have a good bit of unknowns heading into the new season.
All in all, this is about as ideal of a conference slate that you can ask for. There is still plenty of work to do, but hopefully DeVries and the Hoosiers are able to take advantage and put forth a better campaign in Year 2 of the DeVries era.
