Basketball season has arrived in Bloomington, Indiana!

The IU men's team opened up the season on Monday night, while the women's team begins its 2026-27 season on Tuesday. Both the men's and women's programs are looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing out on March Madness last season.

But the start of a new hoops season isn't the only exciting news coming out of IU athletics this week. With another week of Indiana Hoosier sports underway, let's take a look at what's happening across the athletic department in our latest news roundup.

Men's basketball begins season 1-0 after EIU win

The Indiana men's basketball team opened the new season with a 91-57 win over Eastern Illinois on Monday night. It was a solid all-around night for the Hoosiers, who led 44-23 at halftime and never looked back. Markus Burton led the way with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, while Samet Yigitoglu paced the Hoosiers with 7 rebounds. IU out-rebounded EIU 34-26, which included a decisive 13-5 edge on the offensive glass. After struggling on the boards last season, it was encouraging to see the Hoosiers own a convincing reboudning advantage. Hopefully that is able to continue against tougher competition. Indiana's next game comes on Thursday against Bellarmine at Assembly Hall.

Women's basketball set for season opener on Tuesday night

The IU women's basketball team is set to open their 2026-27 campaign on Tuesday night against Florida Gulf Coast. The Hoosiers went 18-14 overall last season with a less-than-ideal 6-12 mark in Big Ten play. Indiana missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017-18, and is now looking to put forth a strong bounce-back campaign. Tip-off between the Hoosiers and Eagles is set for 7 p.m. ET at Assembly Hall and can be streamed via BIG+.

Football enters bye week with plenty of work to do

The Hoosier football team is now set for a much-needed bye week. Indiana has played nine games in nine weeks to start the season, going 8-1 in those contests. Curt Cignetti's squad narrowly avoided several upsets, as they escaped with nail-biting wins over Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan, and most recently, Minnesota. The Hoosiers have shown plenty of vulnerabilities over the last few weeks, but have been able to dig deep when it matters most. Heading into the final three games of the regular season, the Hoosiers have a lot of re-grouping to do over the bye week.

Men's soccer battles for Big Ten regular season title

Owning a record of 13-1-3, the Indiana men's soccer team has just one game remaining in the regular season. The Hoosiers round out regular season play on Wednesday with a home matchup against Michigan State. The Big Ten regular season title is on the line in this one. A win guarantees Indiana at least a share of its 20th Big Ten regular season title as well as the top seed in the conference tournament. The Spartans are three points back of Big Ten co-leaders Indiana and Washington and needs a win to have a chance at sharing the conference title.
