Indiana loses homegrown talent as 4-star in-state TE makes surprising commitment

Indiana was in the running for 4-star TE Mason Oglesby, but now the 2027 prospect will play his college football elsewhere.

Curt Cignetti and his staff are hard at work looking for the new batch of future Hoosiers to bring to Bloomington. It's been a busy week full of ups and downs for Indiana's 2027 recruiting class, but Cignetti has things trending in the right direction.

Cignetti has secured four commitments this week after suffering a tough defeat with the decommitment of prized 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. Cignetti and company suffered another hit with a highly-touted in-state prospect passing over the Hoosiers with his commitment decision.

In-state 4-star TE Mason Oglesby chooses Kansas over Indiana

4-star TE Mason Oglesby has been a target of the Hoosiers for a while, as Cignetti initially extended an offer to the New Palestine native back on February 1, 2025. The Hoosier State product took an official visit to Bloomington last month, and IU fans felt good about where the Cream and Crimson stood in Oglesby's recruitment.

The Hoosiers were firmly in the running throughout his recruitment, and were among his list of final four finalists along with Kansas, Ohio State, and North Carolina. However, Oglesby ultimately decided to pass up his offer from Indiana in favor of the Kansas Jayhawks.

It's an unfortunate recruiting defeat for IU, as Oglesby is one of the highest-ranked prospects in the state. Specifically, the 6'3" 215-pound tight end is ranked as the No. 8 overall player in Indiana and the No. 23 tight end in the country according to 247Sports.

Indiana's championship pedigree is second to none

Oglesby will head to Lawrence to join a Jayhawk program coming off back-to-back 5-7 seasons. After consecutive losing seasons, it will be interesting to see how the Jayhawks fare in the Big 12 this upcoming season. Lane Leipold has turned things around for Kansas, but Kansas' momentum is nowhere near what Cignetti has done at Indiana.

Coming off a perfect 16-0 season that culminated in a National Championship, Indiana has plenty of pedigree to lean on during the recruitment of the nation's top prospects. What Cignetti has done in Bloomington is nothing short of miraculous, and his leadership at the helm of the program gives the Hoosiers plenty of staying power in 2026 and beyond.

When specifically looking at the tight end position, Cignetti turned Riley Nowakowski into an NFL talent. After totaling 32 catches for 387 yards and two touchdowns this past season, Nowakowski was selected in the 5th Round with the No. 169 overall selection in April's 2026 NFL Draft. However, that wasn't enough to keep Oglesby in The Hoosier State.

While missing out on an in-state talent of Oglesby's caliber is unfortunate, Hoosier fans still have plenty of faith in Cignetti's recruiting and talent evaluation abilities. Something tells me he'll be just fine moving forward.
