Indiana leaps 3 spots in AP Poll to No. 19 ahead of matchup with No. 9 Illinois

Indiana moves up to No. 17 in Coaches Poll, No. 19 in AP Top 25

Indiana football jumped three spots in The Associated Press’ Top 25 Poll released Sunday afternoon. The Hoosiers now are sitting at No. 19, one spot ahead of where they began the season this preseason.

The Hoosiers destroyed Indiana State University, 73-0 on Sept. 12 this past Friday night. Indiana was led by junior quarterback Fernando Mendoza, as he went 19 for 20 for 270 yards passing and five touchdowns alongside a rushing touchdown.

Indiana out gained Indiana State 680-77 total, and the Sycamores didn't cross the 50-yard line until the first play of the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers ran for 301 yards, making it their third consecutive game rushing over 300 yards on the ground.

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions stayed at No. 1 and No. 2. Oregon dropped just one spot to No. 6, Illinois remained at No. 9, Michigan moved up two spots to No. 21 and USC entered the poll at No. 25. Nebraska was the only Big Ten team listed in “others receiving votes.”

Based on the AP Top 25, the CFP would open like this:

— No. 9 seed Illinois at No. 8 Texas. Winner vs. No. 1 Ohio State.

— No. 12 seed South Florida at No. 5 seed Georgia. Winner vs. No. 4 Miami.

— No. 10 seed Texas A&M at No. 7 seed Florida State. Winner vs. No. 2 Penn State.

— No. 11 seed Iowa State at No. 6 Oregon. Winner vs. No. 3 LSU.

The first three teams outside the bracket: Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama.

The No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers and No. 9 Illinois Fighting Illini are set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC, Saturday, Sept. 20 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.
