The No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers made the biggest statement of the week and maybe of the entire season so far with their 63-10 dismantling over No. 9 Illinois on Saturday night.
Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium was the site of Saturday night's massacre and possibly the biggest home win in Indiana's football programs history lead by second year head coach Curt Cignetti.
Illinois football came into the game 3-0 overall and ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press poll. But the No. 19-ranked Indiana Hoosiers controlled the entire game against the Fighting Illini.
Indiana junior quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 21-of-23 for 267 yards and 5 touchdowns, entering his name in Heisman Trophy chat on Saturday night. The Hoosiers also ran for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns, led by running back Khobi Martin who had (12 carries, 107 yards, 2 TDs) and Kaelon Black (10 carries, 89 yards, 1 touchdown.
Everyone ate tonight too as wide receiver Elijah Sarratt caught 9 passes for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns, Omar Cooper Jr (last weeks Big Ten Player of The Year) had 6 receptions for 78 yards and 1 touchdown while, Wisconsin transfer Riley Nowakowski had a 43 yard catch for a touchdown at tight end.
Illinois QB Luke Altmyer was sacked six times and never got into rhythm. He finished 14-for-22 for 146 yards and one TD, a 59-yard bomb to Collin Dixon early in the game.
This is the largest margin of defeat for Illinois in the five seasons under Bret Bielema, the biggest prior was a 29-point loss to No. 1 Oregon last season.
It was complete domination by Indiana in a statement win over the Illini. The Hoosiers out gained Illinois 579-161, including 312-2 on the ground.
The Hoosiers have rushed for 300-plus yards in each of their first four games this season.
Former NBA player and Illinois basketball legend Kendall Gill was not too happy about the Fighting Illini's effort and game on Saturday
How are we losing this bad? Waited all day to watch the game. That’s ok, I’m going to keep the faith! 💙🧡
