Head coach Jeff Mercer and his team are still in search of their first win of the season after going 0-4 at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic. The Hoosiers were in each game, even sending two of them to extra innings, but were unable to finish. The only game they truly struggled in was their matchup against No. 7 Oregon State, which they fell to 6-0.
After a couple of days of well-needed rest, the Hoosiers will be back in action this weekend as they head to Cary, North Carolina for three games. Indiana won't face anyone multiple times this weekend, but instead will face Fordham, Harvard, and Big Ten foe Northwestern.
Early baseball will happen this weekend in all but one game. Indiana will take on Fordham at 5:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, February 22, Harvard at 10:00 a.m. CT on Sunday, February 23, and finish off their play in North Carolina against Northwestern at 11:00 a.m. CT on Monday, February 24.
The Hoosiers were supposed to have their home opener today against Purdue Fort Wayne, but due to inclement weather and cold temperatures, it was cancelled and is not currently scheduled for a later date. With the cancelled game, the Hoosiers get a couple extra days of rest before their matchups this weekend.
The No. 25 Hoosiers looked to have a promising start to their season at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic, but instead were met with adversity and walked away without a win. The Hoosiers have since dropped out of the rankings.
Out in Arizona, the Hoosiers had a slow start on offense and pitching gave up just too many hits for the Hoosiers to keep up. Indiana avoided a no-hitter against Oregon State with one hit against the Beaver pitching staff. In a high-scoring affair in the final game of the long weekend, the Hoosiers were unable to complete a comeback in the bottom of the 10th after going dow 13-9 in the top of the inning.
A win is crucial right now for the Hoosiers as they can't afford to wait. Hopefully they will allow us to find something this weekend to give this team a spark to continue the season.
