Back in the middle of May, Indiana's highest-ranked 2027 commit was 4-star CB Monsanna Torbert Jr. At the time, Torbert was ranked as the No. 16 cornerback and No. 139 overall player in the country according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
If IU could only land one player from crucial Official Visit weekend, it's a no-brainer
However, Torbert handed Curt Cignetti and the Hoosiers a tough blow when he decommitted from Indiana on May 18. Since then, Torbert has garnered plenty of attention from a handful of Power 4 programs and he is now locked in a heated Big Ten recruiting battle.
Former Indiana commit Monsanna Torbert Jr. visiting Ohio State this weekend
As it stands, the two schools at the front of Torbert's recruiting hunt appear to be the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines.
With Official Visit season in full swing, Torbert is visiting Ryan Day and the Buckeyes this weekend. The highly-touted prospect was reportedly in Columbus on Thursday to attend OSU's football camp as a spectator prior to getting his Official Visit started on Friday. The Buckeyes have been in the running since the beginning, and Torbert has taken two unofficial visits to Columbus in the last few months. Day and his staff are sure to roll out the red carpet for Torbert this weekend.
Kyle Whittingham and Michigan are still in the mix as well. Torbert has an official visit to Ann Arbor lined up for later this month, and Whittingham has built plenty of recruiting momentum so far this offseason. The Wolverines' new head coach has secured 16 commitments in the 2027 cycle, and 7 are considered blue chip recruits. Michigan's 2027 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 11 in the country by Rivals, and it may not be long before they are in the Top-10.
Monsanna Torbert Jr. has moved up in national recruiting rankings since decommitting from Indiana
Since abandoning his commitment to Indiana, Torbert has moved up in the national rankings. When it comes to cornerbacks, Torbert jumped from No. 16 to No. 13 in the country in the 247Sports Composite. Among all players in the 2027 class, he moved up from the No. 139 to No. 102.
Along with Ohio State and Michigan, other schools such as Auburn, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas have shown interest in Torbert since his decommitment. It will be interesting to see where he decides to commit.
Losing Torbert stings, and seeing him end up with a Big Ten rival would only put salt in the wound for Indiana football fans. However, the Hoosier faithful have plenty of faith in Cignetti. He's shown he doesn't need a roster full of blue chip prospects to win a National Championship, and Indiana's 2027 recruiting class is still in solid shape moving forward.
