When he entered the transfer portal following two seasons at Cal, Fernando Mendoza had a lot of suitors. He drew the attention of Power 4 teams across the country, and of course, ultimately landed at Indiana. In Bloomington, he would orchestrate the greatest season in Indiana football history and cement his legacy in Hoosier sports lore.
As one of the top transfer portal QBs on the market, Mendoza's estimated NIL earnings were a hot topic of conversation. He attracted great demand, but chasing the biggest check wasn't a top priority for Mendoza. Instead, he chose to focus on the opportunity at Indiana and his potential development under Curt Cignetti over the biggest NIL offer. That decision changed everything.

Along with Indiana, the other final contenders for Mendoza's services through the portal were Georgia, Miami (FL), and Missouri. Speaking with On3 via Zoom, Mendoza stated that Indiana did not offer him the most money. But Mendoza wasn't focused on that. He wanted the best opportunity.
"I believe that you need to put the opportunity before the check size. That’s something that I stood by and something that I did in my transfer portal process. Indiana was not the highest bidder. However, I saw the greatest opportunity and I believed in the coaching staff, believed in my teammates and believed in the great culture there at Indiana."Fernando Mendoza
In a day and age where players often take the biggest check size to transfer from school to school, it's refreshing to see Mendoza prioritize something other than money. He had a clear decision-making process and weighed all of his options to make the best possible decision. In fact, he took a pay cut to come to Bloomington.
While he says the financial side of things was still considered, it was not a top priority.
"That was something that ended up paying off in the long-term especially with the opportunity, being able to go there, a great system that fit me. Those were all things on my list, and I believe that money was around maybe the fifth variable or the fourth variable, I believe."Fernando Mendoza
It's clear that Mendoza saw the vision and potential of Indiana football with Cignetti leading the way. The Hoosiers were coming off an 11-1 regular season with an appearance in the College Football Playoff in Cignetti's first season, and were ready to take the next step. Mendoza helped them do that and then some.

It's fair to say Mendoza's decision to come to Bloomington changed everything for the Indiana football program. Mendoza played a leading role in Indiana's path to a perfect 16-0 season that culminated in IU's first-ever National Championship. Along with way, the Hoosiers won their first Big Ten title since 1967, and put together a CFP run that included wins in the Rose Bowl, Peach Bowl, and CFP title game.

For Mendoza personally, the move from Cal to Indiana paid off in the best way possible. Mendoza threw for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns with just 6 interceptions while leading the country with a rating of 182.9. He also added 276 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground. Mendoza came up with clutch moment after clutch moment during Indiana's title run, and in turn, emerged into the clear-cut No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Mendoza is now just one of 25 Heisman Trophy winners to become No. 1 NFL Draft picks. He is also just the 4th quarterback to win the Heisman, win a National Championship, and become the No. 1 overall pick all in the same year.
From a financial sense, Mendoza's pay cut to come to Indiana resulted in an even bigger check down the road, as his rookie contract with the Raiders features a fully guaranteed $57.27 million over four years.
Nowadays so many players are chasing the biggest check as opposed to finding the right situation. Moving forward, it will be interesting to see if Mendoza's decision-making process is followed by other top transfer players. Given the elite results it produced, following Mendoza's approach doesn't seem like such a bad idea.
