A former Hoosier basketball head coach is back in the Division I head coaching ranks.

On Tuesday, The Clarion Ledger reported that Mike Davis has been hired as the next head coach at Mississippi Valley State. He takes over arguably the toughest job in all of college basketball.

Mike Davis hired as the head coach at Mississippi Valley State

Davis is set to lead a Sun Devil program that has not seen much success in recent seasons. MVSU has not won more than nine games in a season since 2011-12, and has not won more than five games since 2018-19. This past season, the program went 3-30 with a 2-16 mark in SWAC play.

Davis takes over for George Ivory III, who finished his tenure at MVSU with a 12-115 record, which equates to a less-than-ideal .094 winning percentage. Needless to say, Davis has a lot of work to do in building up the MVSU program.

Mike Davis spent six seasons as Indiana's head coach

Davis infamously took over as Indiana's head coach on an interim basis following the dismissal of legendary head coach Bob Knight.

Davis first joined Knight's staff in 1997 and served as an assistant for three seasons. He was then named interim head coach on September 12, 2000. After the season on On March 21, 2001, Davis was named as Indiana's 22nd full-time head coach in program history.

Davis spent six seasons leading the Indiana basketball program from 2000-06. He compiled an overall record of 115-79 (.593) with a 55-41 mark (.573) in Big Ten play. He led Indiana to four NCAA Tournament appearances, which was highlighted by an appearance in the 2001-02 National Championship Game. The Hoosiers would ultimately fall to the Gary Williams-led Maryland Terrapins by a score of 64-52.

After his time in Bloomington, Davis was the head coach at UAB from 2006-12, Texas Southern from 2012-18, and Detroit Mercy from 2018-24. In his time as a college basketball head coach, Davis owns an all-time record of 412–360 (.534). He was the C-USA Coach of the Year in 2011 and is a three-time SWAC Coach of the Year (2013, 2015, 2016).

Davis was an assistant at Memphis under Penny Hardaway for the last two seasons and is now back as a Division I head coach.
