Darian DeVries should target these Creighton players after Greg McDermott's retirement

Creighton has multiple players on transfer watch following Greg McDermott's retirement, and these two players could provide some much-needed help for Darian DeVries in Year 2.

Darian DeVries ended his first season at the helm of the Indiana basketball program with an overall record of 18-13 with a 9-11 mark in Big Ten play. He had the Hoosiers well-positioned for a spot in the NCAA Tournament in early February, but a 1-6 record in their final seven games doomed Indiana's March Madness hopes.

That disappointing performance has IU fans handing out harsh grades for DeVries' first season in Bloomington, and after losing the vast majority of the minutes played and points scored from this past season, DeVries has his work cut out for him in re-vamping Indiana's roster for next season.

DeVries figures to lean on the transfer portal once again, help could be available from the Creighton Blue Jays.

On Monday, Pete Thamel reported that Creighton head coach Greg McDermott is retiring after this season. McDermott has been at Creighton since 2010, and has racked up 365 wins in his 16 years in Omaha. Naturally, transfer portal speculation has already begun, as some of Creighton's top players are now on transfer watch amid a coaching change.

There will be some continuity in Creighton's coaching change, as associate head coach and coach-in-waiting Alan Huss is set to take over the program following the Blue Jays' participation in the College Basketball Crown next week.

Still, it's worth exploring possible transfers that DeVries could target should they decide to test the transfer portal waters.

Austin Swartz, sophomore guard

Austin Swartz put together an impressive sophomore season in Omaha. The 6'4" 205-pound guard has started 14 of Creighton's 30 games, and despite playing just 21.5 minutes per game, is second on the team scoring 10.9 points per game. He is an effective three-point shooter, as he knocked down 2+ three's per game and shot 38.3% from beyond the arc. That three-point percentage would have led the Hoosiers this season.

Hailing from Concord, NC, Swartz is no stranger to the portal. He transferred from Miami (FL) to Creighton following his freshman season, and has two years of eligibility remaining. If he decides to enter the portal again, he could make for a solid addition to IU's roster in 2026-27.

Jasen Green, junior forward

Junior forward Jasen Green is Creighton's top rebounder this season. Green has pulled down a team-leading 6.1 rebounds per game for the Blue Jays, including 2.0 offensive rebounds per game. He is also shooting a strong 54.2% from the floor and dishing out 2.5 assists per game. That well-rounded skill set, along with a solid 6'8" 235-pound frame, could be very beneficial for the Hoosiers next season.

Tucker DeVries was IU's leading rebounder this past season, hauling in 5.3 boards per game. Furthermore, IU is set to lost its top five rebounders from this past season. Needing plenty of help on the glass, Green is definitely worth pursuing should he decide to enter the portal.
