Darian DeVries is having a strong second offseason at the helm of the Indiana basketball program. DeVries faced a major roster overhaul after six players ran out of eligibility and six more decided to enter the transfer portal from last year's team. In fact, soon-to-be sophomore Trent Sisley is the only returning player from DeVries' first season in Bloomington.
DeVries has brought in a strong transfer portal class that is catching the attention of the college basketball world. So far, Indiana has added PG Markus Burton (Notre Dame), SG Jaeden Mustaf (Georgia Tech), G Darren Harris (Duke), SG Bryce Lindsay (Villanova), C Samet Yigitoglu (SMU), and PF Aiden Sherrell via the portal.
5 things to know about Indiana basketball's transfer portal haul so far
IU's portal class is receiving plenty of praise, and was even ranked as the No. 1 portal class in the country by both On3 and 247Sports in recent weeks. However, DeVries has not made a portal addition in almost three weeks, which has left the door open for other programs to claim the top spot. Now, Indiana no longer sits at the top of the college basketball transfer portal rankings.
Indiana slips from No. 1 spot in transfer portal rankings
Not only has Indiana slipped from the No. 1 spot, but the Hoosiers have dropped outside of the top-3. Now, Indiana currently holds the No. 4 spot in the 2026 Transfer Basketball Team Rankings from 247Sports.
The Hoosiers have been dethroned by the Louisville Cardinals, who continue to make headlines this offseason. Pat Kelsey is putting together quite the portal class in Louisville, which is led by Kansas transfer Flory Bidunga and Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad. Kelsey was able to land both elite playmakers on the same visit last month. Bidunga was ranked as the No. 1 player on the market, while Shelstad was the No. 18 overall player and No. 4 point guard in the portal.
Kelsey has also added SF Karter Knox from Arkansas, SG De'Shayne Montgomery from Dayton, PF Alvaro Folgueiras from Iowa, and C Gaby Dynes from USC. Kelsey led the Cardinals to an overall record o 24-11 to go along with an NCAA Tournament win this past season, and he seems to have Louisville well-positioned to make some serious noise in 2026-27.
Tennessee is another team making serious noise this offseason. Coming off a third consecutive Elite 8 appearance, Rick Barnes has re-stocked Tennessee's roster with seven transfer additions that rank as the No. 2 portal class in the country. The Vols were able to land Wake Forest point guard Juke Harrs over the weekend, which catapulted them up in the rankings.
Darian DeVries still has more moves to make in the portal
Indiana's roster for 2026-27 currently sits at 10 players. That means DeVries still has multiple roster spots available for next season.
The transfer portal has closed, but players currently in the portal can commit to a new team at any time. Plenty of talented playmaker are still available, and DeVries can get the Hoosiers trending back up in the portal rankings but making another 2-3 strong portal additions.
Last year, DeVries brought in the No. 10 portal class in the country. Even if Indiana stays at No. 4 this offseason, Hoosier basketball fans are feeling good about 2026 and beyond with DeVries' current haul of transfer players.
