Darian DeVries is officially the newest head basketball coach at Indiana, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. No matter how upset the West Virginia athletic director is and no matter how upset Mountaineers fans are, it is done.
DeVries was introduced to the media and Indiana administration in a press conference yesterday and spoke about how excited he was to join the university and even said coaching Indiana was a dream job. DeVries was also asked about the hiring process with Indiana and whether or not he was contacted during the season.
The former West Virginia coach was honest and said they did, but that the Hoosiers were understanding, knowing that DeVries was keeping his focus on the Mountaineers at the time.
"The process is the process and how it plays out," DeVries said in his introductory press conference. "You know as they were going through their season they were very respectful of making sure that my focus continued to be on our team and certainly appreciated that."
Here it is…. Darian DeVries openly admitting this was done during the season. There’s no denying they flat out held Tucker back to save him for next season at Indiana. pic.twitter.com/SqqifxH8Pi

Of course, this hiring process happened during the season of course, Indiana reached out to DeVries before the season ended. The Hoosiers were reaching out to a lot of coaches because they needed to interview candidates to see if they would be a good fit for the program.
It is not like Indiana's season ended, and they just called up DeVries after West Virginia didn't make the tournament either and said, "Hey, you want the job," and DeVries just responded with, "Sure." That is not how a hiring process goes.
Clearly, DeVries still tried to get his team through the season and tried to get them into the NCAA Tournament, and they somehow didn't get in over a team that certainly didn't deserve to be in. He and Indiana respected that he had a season to finish, but once both seasons were over, Indiana had every right to offer the job officially to DeVries and he had every right to take it at that point.
